Chelsea will be aiming to get back on track in the Premier League as they face a resurgent Tottenham Hotspur side in a London derby on Sunday.
Both sides are battling for a place in the top four and a victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for either could go a long way in the race for a UEFA Champions League place in 2020/21.
Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs have been highly impressive since the arrival of Jose Mourinho in North London. Overseeing seven matches so far in all competitions, Tottenham have managed to win five of them, with their last victory coming in the form of a slender 2-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Another win against the Blues would put them fourth and above this weekend’s opponents on goal difference. Their form on home soil is also highly impressive, having not dropped points since Mourinho’s appointment and in total have not lost a game at their home ground since the 7-2 thumping at the hands of Bayern Munich back at the start of October. One aspect that remains a trouble for Spurs under Mourinho is their ability to keep clean sheets. So far they have only managed to keep one shutout under the Portuguese, that coming in the 5-0 success against Burnley. No club in the entire top flight have fewer clean sheets than Spurs so that will certainly be a record they are keen to improve as they continue their push for a top four place.
Team News
Midfielder Tanguy Ndombele is set to be subjected to a late fitness test ahead of the match having been suffering with a groin problem. However, Erik Lamela and Ben Davies are ruled out for the match and join long-term absentee Hugo Lloris on the sidelines.
Chelsea
Despite Chelsea’s extremely promising start to the season under new boss Frank Lampard, the Londoners have been struggling for consistency in recent weeks. In their last seven matches, the Blues have fallen to four defeats, drawn one match and only managed to win two against Lille and Aston Villa. Much like Spurs, their recent troubles revolve around their defensive record. In all competitions this season, the Blues have only managed to keep four clean sheets, with their last one coming in a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge in October. As a matter of fact, the team have only earned a single clean sheet away from home in the Premier League this calendar year and even that came in the final match of the 2018/19 season towards the end of the reign of former boss Maurizio Sarri. That poor record has seen them fall to defeat in their last two away league games to Manchester City and Everton.
Team News
Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori could well be back in action for the trip across the capital after recovering from an ankle and hip injury respectively. Midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is also still out with a calf problem.
Key Facts To Consider
- Chelsea have the better head-to-head record between the two sides (W70, D40, L54)
- Jose Mourinho has won four out of his nine games against Chelsea throughout his career
- The Blues won the last clash between the two 2-0 back in February 2019
- Tottenham have only won one out of their last seven home matches against Chelsea
- Both Chelsea and Tottenham have only kept five Premier League clean sheets between them so far this season
Conclusion
This match really could be key in the race for the top four. Whilst Spurs are resurgent and Chelsea are experiencing a bout of extremely difficult form, it should be a fascinating watch between the two. Their poor defensive records could make for a few goals in North London and it could end in a draw.
