Another weekend of Premier League action is upon us as teams up and down the top flight attempt to build some momentum for themselves in the first few games of the new season. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be a fascinating clash of styles between Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United. Both clubs have been forced to endure a lot of stick from their respective fanbases in the last few months, but they’ll be hoping to forget about all of that when they meet in North London.
Tottenham
The arrival of Gareth Bale has automatically lifted the mood around Tottenham Hotspur Football Club with many believing that his return could be the catalyst behind the club rising up through the ranks of the Premier League once again. Of course, they’ll also need to see some form of sustained improvement from Jose Mourinho, and that isn’t exactly going to come overnight given how long he’s been managing at the top level in world football.
Team News
Tanganga and Bale are both set to miss out for Tottenham here and it appears as if Reguilon’s debut will also have to wait due to a recent ankle injury. Ndombele isn’t expected to feature whereas there are still many questions surrounding the future of Dele Alli.
Newcastle
Whether it be the takeover or Steve Bruce, Newcastle fans have always got something in their back locker that’s going to frustrate them. As a club they should be shooting for a finish in the top half but they just don’t seem capable of doing that under the current regime. Unfortunately some continue to see survival as enough of an achievement, whereas others believe they need to be shooting for the stars.
Team News
The expectation is that Lewis and Saint-Maximin will be assessed before kickoff with Bruce having to deal with a handful of injury problems. Dubravka, Dummett, Gayle, Schar and Matty Longstaff have all been ruled out, although Sean Longstaff is going to be pushing for a place in the starting XI.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in July, Tottenham beat Newcastle 3-1.
- Tottenham have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Newcastle have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Tottenham have scored 12 goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
- Newcastle have scored 11 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
Conclusion
Newcastle will do their best to hold Spurs and push out from the back, and they’ll probably end up having a bit of success with their aerial work. However, we just don’t think that’s going to be enough when put up against a Tottenham team with a renewed sense of purpose. We’re expecting this to be a pretty scrappy affair with both sides getting their fair share of shots in but Spurs should be able to come away with all three points.
