While there may be a whole host of games to get excited about this week, the lingering cloud of the European Super League is bound to be the number one topic on the mind of most football fans. One team that’s involved in the process, Tottenham Hotspur, will be back in action against Southampton on Wednesday night. It may not seem like a particularly important game right now but all things considered, it’s still key for Spurs to build momentum heading into the weekend.
Tottenham
In what would’ve otherwise been the biggest news of the day, Jose Mourinho was sacked as Tottenham manager yesterday following a poor run of results. It took just 17 months for him to lost his place in charge and now, many will be questioning what comes next for them. They’re obviously going to be part of the European Super League if it winds up going ahead but they have to start thinking about their overall legacy if those plans happen.
Team News
Davies has been ruled out through injury in this one with the two big question marks being Doherty and Kane. That’s especially true for Kane who limped off against Everton, with many wondering whether he’ll be fit for Sunday’s big final.
Southampton
Southampton’s defeat in their FA Cup semi-final to Leicester means the only thing on their mind right now needs to be finishing the season strong. The Saints were hoping for a lot more than they’ve got and the belief is going to be that strengthening in the summer could really help them. Of course, that all depends on how things go in the next few months with the proposed ESL, but Ralph Hasenhuttl can only focus on the next task at hand.
Team News
Ward-Prowse, Ings and Walcott were all fit enough to feature against Burnley at the weekend with Minamino now being set to feature after some time away following the international break. In terms of players who have officially been ruled out of the running to play here, Romeu, Obafemi and Smallbone are all on the shelf.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in September, Tottenham beat Southampton 5-2.
- Tottenham have won one, drawn two and lost three of their last six games.
- Southampton have won two and lost four of their last six games.
- Tottenham have scored eight goals and conceded 12 in their last six games.
- Southampton have scored nine goals and conceded 13 in their last six games.
Conclusion
Weirdly enough we think the departure of Mourinho is going to have a positive effect on a Spurs side that will likely be rotated fairly heavily in preparation for the Carabao Cup final at the weekend. The Saints don’t really have anything left to play for this season aside from 100% guaranteeing their top flight safety for another year, but in this game, we’re expecting Spurs to come out swinging with an emphatic 3-1 win in North London.
