Tottenham Hotspur and Watford will meet this weekend in the Premier League as we wave goodbye to international football for a while. Spurs and Watford have both had nightmare starts to the new campaign, to the point where both clubs probably can’t believe they were playing in a Champions League Final and FA Cup Final respectively just a matter of months ago. There’s something much bigger happening within both sets of squads, and they need to rectify it pretty quickly.
Tottenham
Mauricio Pochettino is a man under pressure, which is a statement that would’ve seemed utterly ridiculous just a few short months ago. Spurs are a shadow of themselves and in many ways, the international break is the best thing that could’ve possibly happened to them. They’ve been gifted an opportunity to reset and reflect on what has gone on up to this point, and where they can make changes. It’s not just about transfers, either, because tactically speaking they’re just getting it all wrong.
Team News
Lloris will be out until 2020 as we know due to his dislocated elbow, with Gazzaniga being set to start ahead of Vorm. Aurier will be available after his suspension, whereas Lo Celso and Sessegnon aren’t yet ready to return to training. Moura could start in place of Son.
Watford
Watford hit their peak when they came from 2-0 down to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 at Wembley, and the majority of Watford fans themselves will probably tell you the exact same thing. They’ve already brought in a new manager this season, they don’t have a Premier League win to their name so far this season, and the squad just looks completely disjointed. They need to crawl their way through to January, at which point there are some big changes required in the transfer window.
Team News
Prodl may miss out after being forced off against Sheffield United, which could lead to Dawson making his way into the side. Capoue will be assessed whereas Success and Deeney are still out of action.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in January, Tottenham beat Watford 2-1.
- Tottenham have won one, drawn two and lost three of their last six games.
- Watford have won one, drawn three and lost two of their last six games.
- Tottenham have scored seven goals and conceded 15 in their last six games.
- Watford have scored five goals and conceded 14 in their last six games.
Conclusion
With 29 goals conceded between these two sides across 12 games of football, we’d suggest that there will almost certainly be some defensive issues on display when they meet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. While Spurs haven’t exactly been great, and even that might be an understatement, we still think they’ve got what it takes to get past Watford. The Hornets just don’t seem to have any kind of hope this season and while that could be an overexaggeration, the lack of quality in their squad suggests otherwise.
