The 2021/22 domestic football campaign is officially behind us and while we may have to wait until November for the World Cup to kick off, that doesn’t mean we’re short on international action. The UEFA Nations League is back in our lives with a parade of nations attempting to make some noise – including Wales and Belgium, who will meet in Cardiff this weekend.
Wales
The dragons have roared once again. For the first time in 64 years, Wales will play at the World Cup after defeating Ukraine to qualify just a matter of days ago. The fact that they’ve made it to this point is an achievement in itself but now, they need to shift their focus back to the Nations League and realise how much of a platform they’ve got to build on now in the months that lie ahead.
Team News
Broadhead is out, Ward is a fitness concern and Hennessey is also doubtful following his heroics against Ukraine with Bale being tipped to feature.
Belgium
The famous golden generation of Belgium needs to be given something to shout about and this winter, they may be looking at one of their final opportunities to make a real splash with this group of players. They’ve certainly got the talent within their ranks to go all the way but they seem to be lacking the confidence in big tournaments because the experience factor can’t be used as an excuse anymore.
Team News
Lukaku is the only major injury absence with many expecting to see Trossard start after a solid showing against Poland.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in November, Wales and Belgium drew 1-1.
- Wales have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
- Belgium have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
- Wales have scored seven goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
- Belgium have scored 16 goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
Conclusion
These two sides know each other pretty well at this point and with the game taking place in Wales, we’re expecting to see the hosts feel more confident – regardless of the result against the Dutch. Belgium will move the ball around nicely and probably vault themselves into an early lead, but we think over time, the Welsh will come into proceedings and eventually equalise to ensure they share the spoils.
