UEFA Euro 2021 is right around the corner but before all of that kicks off this summer, we have the start of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying to contend with across the continent of Europe. There are plenty of nations out there who will really fancy their chances at reaching Qatar next year whereas others just want to try and put forward a good account of themselves. Today, we’ll look at a game between two teams who are probably in the first of the two categories – Wales and Czech Republic.
Wales
The looming presence of Ryan Giggs as Wales manager was always going to create some issues given his arrest towards the end of last year, but the big question now focuses on how the national team will bounce back. They put in a spirited effort against Belgium the other day but ultimately fell short before beating Mexico, which still leaves fans in a bit of a flux as nobody knows what exactly this squad is capable of when they play to their full potential.
Team News
Lawrence has been ruled out due to COVID restrictions whereas Joe Allen is set to miss out on this one through an injury sustained in the game against Belgium.
Czech Republic
Despite having some success in the Euros since becoming the Czech Republic, this national team has only qualified for the World Cup once as an independent nation – back in 2006. In many ways you could argue they’ve been overtaken by Slovakia in terms of overall consistency and quality, but now, we’re at a point where they seem to be turning over a new leaf. They began their WCQ campaign like a house on fire with a 6-2 win over Estonia, and then against Belgium, they were impressive in a 1-1 draw.
Team News
Schick has been tipped is set to lead from the front in this game but the Czechs aren’t without their own injury problems. Kalas, Kral and Kolar have all been ruled out with Silhavy being tipped to continue with a 4-1-4-1 formation.
Factors to Consider
- Czech Republic are unbeaten in three previous meetings against Wales.
- Wales have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
- Czech Republic have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Wales have scored seven goals and conceded four in their last six games.
- Czech Republic have scored 10 goals and conceded five in their last six games.
Conclusion
We think there’s more than enough star power within the Welsh ranks to cause the Czechs problems here, but the visitors just seem to be on more of a high right now. They’re feeling themselves with a new rhythm and a new style to their play and that can only be a good thing in the midst of an international break as hectic as this one. We’re backing Czech Republic to win 2-1 here in what should be a fascinating game to watch.
