The FA Cup semi-finals are upon us, as four teams attempt to take that one last step towards the final at Wembley – which is where they’ll also be playing this weekend. Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion are set to square off in the first of the two semis later on today, but tomorrow, the attention will turn towards Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers. These two clubs have been silently battling one another in the race for seventh over the course of the last few months, and now, they’ll tussle in one of the biggest games of their respective recent histories.

Watford

Watford have flown under the radar for much of the season as one of the most consistent sides outside of the top six. Everyone was expecting them to drop off and they just haven’t done so, and in the process, they’ve transformed themselves into a legitimate threat in the top half of the table. They’re playing some great football and have a solid infrastructure for the first time in a long time, and the key for them is going to be whether or not they can sustain this success in the next few years and beyond.

Team News

Andre Gray is set to play in the super sub role, with Gomes hoping to start for the Hornets in one of his final games for the club.

Wolves

Wolves have been viewed by many as the success story of the 2018/19 season, and truth be told, it’s hard to argue with that. The Midlands based club have been able to maintain their momentum from last year’s Championship winning campaign, and in doing so, they’ve had one of the best seasons a newly promoted side has had in years. Under the guidance of Nuno Espirito Santo they’ve built a squad that is more than capable of not only finishing seventh, but also winning the FA Cup.

Team News

Jonny is set to come back in for Vinagre, with John Ruddy being tipped to start ahead of Patricio once again.

Factors to Consider

  • The last game between these two sides ended 2-0 to Watford.
  • Watford beat Woking, Newcastle, QPR and Crystal Palace to get to the semi-final.
  • Wolves beat Liverpool, Shrewsbury, Bristol City and Manchester United to get to the semi-final.
  • Watford have won three and lost three of their last six games.
  • Wolves have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.

Conclusion

This is going to be a really fascinating game, because if both sides play to their full potential, then you’d think Wolves would be favoured to come out on top. Alas, the Hornets seem to know how to turn up in these kinds of games, and we’re backing them to edge ahead early and never surrender the lead. Both teams have got the league to think about too but we do believe they’re going to give it everything they’ve got at Wembley, which should lead to a more competitive semi than City vs Brighton.

Prediction: Watford win
