Following an impressive midweek Champions League record-breaking performance against Dinamo Zagreb, Bayern Munich travels to Bremen to consolidate its Bundesliga leader position. The game plays on Saturday at Weserstadion in front of 40000 fans keen to see their favourites break the deadlock and defeat the German Giants,  a feat last achieved two decades ago (2006).

Werder Bremen

Ending their previous campaign with an emphatic home win against Bochum (4-1), Werder Bremen was disappointed to miss out on the Conference League spot at goal difference. Starting the new season preparation earlier in July, the hosts failed to make an impression when playing against Championship sides Sheff Wednesday and Coventry. However, the real test came against Ligue 1 outfit Rennes, which concluded the preparations for the start of the new season in a disappointing fashion (1-0 defeat).

Werder Bremen opened their campaign on a high note after defeating the lower league side Energie Cottbus in the German Cup, by displaying a goal-scoring appetite (1-3) that extended in the following games. Travelling to Augsburg for the Bundesliga opener returned one of the best games in Bundesliga’s Day 1 as Werder Bremen staged a second-half comeback to set the final score (2-2).

However, despite being given slim chances in the second game played at home against the Champions League’s last edition finalist, Borussia Dortmund, Ole Werner’s team blocked the visitors completely in a goalless stalemate. Another tricky test was on the way when Bremen travelled to Mainz, returning one of the upsets of the round when the Green and Whites won all points at stake (1-2 final score).

Team New

Ole Werner has limited attacking options on the right-hand side as Oliver Burge and Justin Njinnmah are both sidelined. Furthermore, experienced centre-back Milos Veljkovic will not be able to play against Harry Kane after suffering a foot injury in August.

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich had the worst spell last season after finishing 3rd in the Bundesliga, 18 points behind current champions Bayer Leverkusen. While the Bavarian Giants failed to win a trophy for the first time since 2012, the behind-scenes problems were ongoing during the Summer break.

With Thomas Tuchel deciding to part ways after not reaching an agreement with the club, Bayern was surprised to see a few high-profile managers rejecting the manager job. Although appointing the former Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany, at the helm raised doubts among the fans and the press, the Belgian coach proved otherwise.

After a couple of friendly games against weaker sides, the Bavarians tested twice their strength against Tottenham. Defeating the North London side in both games proved Bayern is back in business re-confirming their favourites status to win silverware in the opening game won against Ulm (4-0) in the German Cup.

Despite taking an early lead in the Bundesliga debut away at Wolfsburg, Bayern’s fans had a deja vu after witnessing their team falling behind. Yet, Vincent Company seem to have addressed the previous season’s mental breakdown after seeing his team score twice and record a win on his Bundesliga debut (2-3 final score).

Returning to Allianz Arena on a high, Bayer Munich dispatched Freiburg with a 2-0 win before heading to newly-promoted Holstein Kiel, where they made a statement to regain the Bundesliga crown with a 6-1 success. Harry Kane stole the show with a hattrick setting the fight with Manchester City’s ace Erling Haaland for Europe’s Golden Boot.

Although the Holstein Kiel success was the perfect game played by Bayern Munich, Vincent Company’s team achieved history Tuesday night after destroying Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League by scoring a competition record 9 -goals (9-2 final score).

The England captain starred again after netting four times, bringing his tally to nine strikes in four competitive games for Bayern Munich.

Team News

Despite having five players injured, none of them are first-team starters. Vincent Kompany will likely start with his best lineup, attempting to consolidate the Bundesliga’s leadership position. Furthermore, after impressing against Dinamo Zagreb, in-form striker Harry Kane is expected to spearhead the attacking line and have his name on the scoreboard.

Key factors to consider

  • Werder Bremen is undefeated this season (W2D2)
  • The hosts’ last home win against Bayern Munich was in 2006
  • The visitors are in top form dominating their opponents in all competitions
  • Bayer Munich set a Champions League record after destroying Dinamo Zagreb (9-2)

Conclusion

With the full-time result question solved before the game starts, Bayern Munich is in fifth gear after scoring 15 goals in the last two games. The only enigma remains how many goals will score the current Bundesliga leaders.

Verdict: AH Bayern Munich (-1.5)

Best odds: 81/100
