As millions around the world continue to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, one slice of normality has remained the same – sport. We’re now in a new year and that means we’re going to be experiencing a whole lost of games coming at us thick and fast between now and May, which is especially true in the English Premier League. Today, we’re going to take a look at something of a David vs Goliath encounter – West Bromwich Albion vs Manchester City.
West Brom
The introduction of Sam Allardyce was intended to strike some life into this West Bromwich Albion side and, in some ways, it has. The win over rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Black Country derby will be talked about and remembered for many years to come, but they can’t bask in the glory of those three points for too long – mainly because they’re still some way off of surviving for another year in the top flight.
Team News
Phillips is still out of action after testing positive for COVID-19 whereas Snodgrass is set to return after controversially missing out on the West Ham game. Elsewhere, three important players have been ruled out through injury: Diangana, Townsend and Grant.
Manchester City
As the contenders continue to fall away in this enticing Premier League title race, Manchester City are really starting to emerge as the clear favourites for the crown. Liverpool look lost, Leicester are still outsiders, Tottenham are inconsistent and many think Manchester United are one bad result away from their momentum disappearing. It’s a tedious time at the top, and City are the only ones who seem to be relishing the challenge.
Team News
Aguero’s misery continues as he misses out after testing positive for COVID-19. Walker is a doubt due to a fitness concern but should be able to start barring any last minute complications, with the two players absent through injury being pretty important figures in their own right – De Bruyne and Ake.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in mid-December, West Brom held Man City to a 1-1 draw.
- West Brom have won one, drawn two and lost three of their last six games.
- Man City have won their last 10 games in all competitions – since the draw against the Baggies.
- West Brom have scored seven goals and conceded 16 in their last six games.
- Man City have scored 15 goals and conceded one in their last six games.
West Brom have proven their ability to hold City to a draw as recently as last month, but a lot has changed since then. Pep’s men just can’t seem to stop scoring and, more importantly, stop winning. The Baggies, by contrast, may have been able to secure a positive result here and there, but they just aren’t consistent enough. We don’t think this is going to be particularly pretty as Manchester City continue their march towards another strong title push. Prediction: Manchester City win Best Odds: 2/11 Bookmaker: 888sport
