The Premier League is underway and fans are ready to really kick things into the next gear after an electric opening weekend. We saw upsets, cracking goals and a whole lot of dramatic moments in what still holds the title of being the best top flight in the beautiful game today. On Sunday we’ll see another enticing match-up take place, this time in the capital as last season’s surprise package West Ham United lock horns with FA Cup winners Leicester City.
West Ham
West Ham United came out of nowhere in 2020/21 and emerged as a team more than capable of mixing it up with the top flight’s finest. They’ll be joining Leicester in the Europa League and under the guidance of David Moyes, there’s no reason why they can’t have some real success in the competition. The big question is whether or not their squad is strong enough to handle the constraints of fixture congestion which, as we know, has hampered teams in the past.
Team News
The Hammers aren’t expected to make any changes to their starting XI after a dominant win to open up their Premier League season. Ogbonna will maintain his place at the back after returning from fitness, Fabianski should remain as the club’s number one and Masuaku is still a fitness doubt.
Leicester
As FA Cup winners there’s bound to be a certain expectation behind Leicester City this season, especially given the talk about them potentially replacing Arsenal in the “big six” conversation. Still, Brendan Rodgers knows that their fans will expect a top four finish given their gradual progression in recent years, and at the very least they’ll want to mount a serious challenge alongside a strong run in the Europa League.
Team News
Vestergaard is expected to make his full debut for the club tomorrow after his move from Southampton. Bertrand will miss out due to COVID-19 with Thomas maintaining his spot in the starting line-up. Elsewhere, Maddison and Castagne are fitness concerns with the following players being ruled out: Fofana, Justin, Mendy and Evans.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in April, West Ham beat Leicester 3-2.
- West Ham finished 6th in the Premier League with 65 points last season.
- Leicester finished 5th in the Premier League with 66 points last season.
- West Ham opened their campaign with a 4-2 win over Newcastle.
- Leicester opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Wolves.
Conclusion
We expect this to be a pretty tight game between two sides who have proven themselves to be more than capable of pushing the big six in just about every department. We think West Ham will actually take the lead in this one before Leicester start to slowly, but surely, take over and dominate possession. We expect them to just about see out a narrow 2-1 win to keep their 100% start to the campaign going.
