As millions around the world continue to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, one slice of normality has remained the same – sport. We’re now in a new year and that means we’re going to be experiencing a whole lost of games coming at us thick and fast between now and May, which is especially true in the English Premier League. Today, we’re going to take a look at a fixture that will pit two of the top flight’s most exciting teams against one another – West Ham United vs Liverpool.
West Ham
West Ham United have defied all expectations that were put in front of them up to this point in the season but as we all know, taking your eye off the ball in a league like this could prove fatal. They are on track to make a serious push for the top six and, at the very least, seventh place, which may still be good enough for a place in Europe. They’ve surprised everyone so far and they clearly aren’t planning on stopping just yet.
Team News
Randolph is a fitness doubt and Masuaku is out through injury, but West Ham will be hoping that new signing Jesse Lingard will be ready to feature in some form.
Liverpool
Liverpool’s poor run of form definitely needs to be viewed as a concerning point in this campaign given that they’re no longer the favourites to win the title, but the victory over Tottenham really did prove what they can do when they hit their best form. Now, as they prepare to head across London to face the Hammers, the expectation will be that they can keep up that same energy – giving themselves the best chance of pushing back against Manchester City at the top of the table.
Team News
Fabinho and Matip are both fitness doubts which will serve as a big concern for Klopp with the following players still being on the shelf through injuries of their own: Keita, Jota, Gomez and, arguably most importantly, van Dijk.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting on Halloween, Liverpool beat West Ham 2-1.
- West Ham have won their last six games in all competitions.
- Liverpool have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- West Ham have scored 12 goals and conceded three in their last six games.
- Liverpool have scored nine goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
David Moyes will be hungry to pick up a rare win over the Reds and because of that, we’re expecting them to really go for it. That’s probably going to wind up playing into the hands of Jurgen Klopp’s side but if nothing else, it should make for one of the most entertaining games of the season thus far. We’re going to back Liverpool to edge out a 2-1 win, but you can bet that they’re going to have to really fight for it. Prediction: Liverpool win Best Odds: 3/4 Bookmaker: 888sport
