The Premier League returns this weekend after a busy week of Carabao Cup (League Cup) action, and there’s plenty for us to keep our eye on. With six games gone in the top flight of English football it feels like all twenty teams are starting to settle into the campaign, and while some are faring better than others, there’s definitely still room for growth. One game, in particular, that intrigues us this weekend will take place in London as West Ham United square off against Manchester United.
West Ham
It’s taken Manuel Pellegrini a few weeks, but he finally seems to be turning the Hammers around with an 8-0 win over Macclesfield, a 3-1 win over Everton and a 0-0 draw with Chelsea in their last three games. The squad are starting to gel as a unit and if they’re able to keep this up over the next few months, then there’s no reason why they can’t contend for a place in the top half of the table this season.
Team News
Arnautovic and Yarmolenko will continue to try and build their partnership with one another up top, whereas Zabaleta will continue to guide Rice in the right direction at the back.
Manchester United
After the first handful of games this season it felt like United were in some trouble, but after their League Cup defeat at the hands of Derby County, it really does seem as if Jose Mourinho is running out of time – and fast. While their campaign hasn’t exactly been a disaster there’s still plenty of work to be done, and the first thing that needs to be resolved is the issue between Jose and Paul Pogba. Whatever the case may be between the two of them they need to put it to one side, because when this squad performs to its potential, great things can happen.
Team News
Fellaini could start this game after his goal against Derby, with Martial potentially being given a chance to shine alongside Romelu Lukaku who needs to start finding some consistency in front of goal once again.
Factors to Consider
- The game will be played at West Ham’s London Stadium.
- Man United lead 65-43 in the overall head to head standings, with 31 draws.
- In their last meeting, the two sides played out a 0-0 draw back in May.
- West Ham have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Man United have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
Conclusion
West Ham are going to approach this game with a little bit more freedom than Manchester United, because while they can smell blood in the water, it doesn’t feel like they’re going to ‘go after’ them in the way that they should now that they’ve got a league win under their belt. The visitors, on the other hand, could be more dangerous than ever with Jose Mourinho being backed into a corner. We’re predicting a thoroughly entertaining back and forth clash, that ends with United (Manchester) winning 3-2.
