The first set of midweek Premier League fixtures are upon us as the top flight attempts to get through as many games as possible before we reach the World Cup winter break later this year. This is already shaping up to be arguably the most competitive year of PL action we’ve seen in a long time, and hopefully that’ll continue this week – especially at London Stadium where West Ham United will take on Tottenham Hotspur.
West Ham
David Moyes has been heavily praised for the work he’s done since returning to East London but this season feels like it’s going to be his biggest test yet. Sure, the Hammers want to do well in the Conference League and potentially even win the whole thing, but in equal measure they’ll also believe they’re capable of re-entering the top six – and that balancing act is a tricky one to manage.
Team News
Antonio is expected to return to the starting XI, Aguerd has been ruled out through injury and the following players are doubtful: Dawson, Johnson and Cresswell.
Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur have expectations on their shoulders and so far, they’re doing a good job of living up to them. There are still some clear and evident problems that need to be addressed if they’re going to make a push for silverware this season and beyond, but given the squad they have alongside the gaffer they’ve got in charge, it’s not surprising to understand why the fanbase is excited.
Team News
Richarlison has been tipped to make his first full start whereas Romero, Moura, Skipp and Gil will all be assessed.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in March, Tottenham beat West Ham 3-1.
- West Ham have won one and lost three of their PL games so far.
- Tottenham have won three and drawn one of their PL games so far.
- West Ham have scored one goal and conceded five in the PL this season.
- Tottenham have scored nine goals and conceded three in the PL this season.
Conclusion
It’s going to be under the lights, it’s a derby, and West Ham are coming off the back of a much-needed win – which is why we think this is such a fun test of Antonio Conte’s Spurs side at such an early stage of the season. This is going to be a gritty, aerial battle that is probably going to get quite feisty at times, ending with the two teams sharing the spoils in a great 1-1 draw.
