The international break has been and gone and in its place, we have the return of Premier League football. We’re closing in on the final eight-game stretch of the season and it’s time to start whittling down the contenders in a range of different mini-contests up and down the table. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be an enticing clash between Midlands rivals Wolves and Aston Villa.
Wolves
With some better backing last summer and in January, you could argue Wolverhampton Wanderers would’ve had the strength in depth to make a real go of it in the push for the top four. Alas, things haven’t quite gone to plan as of yet, and despite the superstar names they have at their disposal it seems as if it’ll take a big effort from the boys from the Black Country if they want to play European football next season.
Team News
Hoever and Neves are out through injury here with Jimenez being suspended. Elsewhere, Semedo and Neto are considered to be fitness concerns.
Aston Villa
The introduction of Steven Gerrard has certainly helped to create a bit of momentum for an Aston Villa side that could’ve so easily slipped into the relegation battle had it not been for the boost of a new managerial appointment. They’re expected to spend big in the summer but it’s not outside the realm of possibility for them to vault into the top eight which, all things considered, would be a big achievement.
Team News
Digne is expected to return to the starting XI after recovering from injury, Hause has been ruled out and Bailey will be assessed alongside Nakamba.
Factors to Consider
- In their meeting back in October, Wolves beat Aston Villa 3-2 thanks to a late comeback.
- Wolves have won two and lost four of their last six games.
- Aston Villa have won three and lost three of their last six games.
- Wolves have scored eight goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
- Aston Villa have scored 10 goals and conceded four in their last six games.
Conclusion
The form table says one thing but even without some of their key names here, we still think the hosts are going to get the job done against their local rivals. This game will come down to defensive fortitude, which Wolves tend to have in the big moments, and resiliency in midfield which they should also possess. It’ll be tough and a grind until the final seconds, but Bruno’s men will win 1-0.
