While European football may have been the priority for many fans throughout the course of the week, the domestic game will be returning to our screens once again this weekend with the Premier League action being kicked off on Friday night by Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace. Both clubs have high hopes for the season ahead and with both residing in the top half after six games, they’ve got a lot to lose when they meet under the lights at Molineux.
Wolves
It may have been a decent start to the season on paper for Wolves, but there are plenty of supporters out there who believe there’s still a long way for them to go – especially after Jota and Doherty both left the club over the summer. They should easily be able to settle in the top half again between now and the end of the campaign, but we all know they’ll be aiming higher than that. If they can start to really build back that team cohesion they’ve had in the last few years, then qualifying for Europe is a legitimate possibility.
Team News
The only injury concern for Wolves is still Jonny, with many expecting Nuno to name the same starting XI that featured against Newcastle – although Traore could get the nod this time around.
Crystal Palace
Roy Hodgson has always had his fair share of critics but through all of that, he’s still stuck around at the highest level in the beautiful game. The Eagles are a steady Premier League side under his tutelage and now that they’re really starting to invest in the future, they could push even higher. It’s going to take time but in a meeting like this against a team like Wolves, they shouldn’t have any fear whatsoever.
Team News
Butland and Ayew have both been cleared to play after testing positive for COVID-19 and going through the correct procedures to get back into contention. Wickham, Ferguson and Hennessey are all out injured whereas Ward, Mitchell and Riedewald are doubts.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in July, Wolves beat Crystal Palace 2-0.
- Wolves have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Crystal Palace have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
- Wolves have scored four goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
- Crystal Palace have scored seven goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
Conclusion
Wolves are clearly struggling to find their shooting boots and we think that’s going to lead the media down the same path they always go down – that they’re a second half team. In reality, this is probably going to be quite a competitive encounter with Wolves just about controlling the pace of the game, before scoring a late winner to give them another narrow 1-0 win. It won’t be a great victory, but it’s still another step in the right direction for Nuno’s men.
