Manchester United begin their European season with a trip to Switzerland where they will face Young Boys at the Stade de Suisse in Bern. Unbeaten in the new season, Swiss champions are welcoming a Man United side who’s bursting with confidence after back-to-back wins in the Premier League.
Young Boys
The Bern-based outfit Young Boys cruised to last season’s Super League title and seem to be going full strength forward in the new campaign as well. Having finished the domestic run 15 points clear ahead of Basel, Young Boys kicked off the new season with six league wins that put them eight points in front of St. Gallen in Switzerland’s top tier.
It’s been a rather successful run for Young Boys overall knowing that Georardo Seoane’s men have yet to suffer a defeat in the new term. Nine wins in ten matches will have brought plenty of confidence to Swiss champions and there is no doubt they will be raring to go with Europe’s elite competition. The Swiss champions secured their place in the Champions League after eliminating Croatian powerhouse Dinamo Zagreb – 3-2 on aggregate – but were given a rather unfortunate draw as they were pitted against Manchester United, Juventus and Valencia.
Team News
Young midfielders Jordan Lotomba and Sandro Lauper are both set to miss the Manchester United clash due to injury.
Miralem Sulejmani recovered from a concussion and could make his first start this season. Mbabu, Teixeira and Wuthrich are all selection doubts.
Manchester United
Premier League powerhouse Manchester United do not have fond memories of their last trip to Switzerland. Jose Mourinho’s men lost their last two games in Switzerland but will be arriving in Bern feeling confident.
After a defeat in the opening round of the Premier League, Manchester United won their last two matches on the road and are finally beginning to look like a proper side. Wins over Burnley and Watford have been a huge morale boost for the Red Devils ahead of what will become the first competitive meeting with Young Boys. Mourinho’s men will be keen to kick off their international campaign in style and will be expected to go strong from the off. The Portuguese manager received plenty of criticism this season but it appears as if he has begun assembling the pieces together and we don’t think United will have serious issues marching through Bern with three points in the bag.
Team News
Luke Shaw is set to return to the first-team fold for Wednesday night. Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo and Diogo Dalot are all racing with fitness but are unlikely to be given a chance in Bern.
Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford are both available as their domestic suspensions do not apply to European matches.
Key Factors to Consider
- Young Boys won 9 of their last 10 matches
- Swiss champions only have 3 wins to their name out of 12 European games though
- Young Boys only won 1 of 6 matches against English opposition
- Manchester United won their last two away matches
- Romelu Lukaku scored 5 goals – as an Everton player – against Young Boys
Conclusion
Manchester United are flying high on confidence following back-to-back winning stretch and will be looking to win their first-ever competitive meeting with Young Boys. The Swiss champions are enjoying a fantastic run but have yet to encounter a side as strong as the Red Devils. We expect goals on both ends and an away win here.
