Aston Villa and Wolverhampton played out a goalless draw on Saturday, as both sides continued their unbeaten starts in the Premier League.
In a match bereft of regular goalmouth action, Villa captain Stylian Petrov tried his luck from distance in the early exchanges, but his strike went well wide of the target.
Playing his second match in front of the Villa Park faithful, Charles N’Zogbia was impressing at times in his first Midlands derby, but like team-mate Petrov the Frenchman could only manage a feeble shot on goal that went well wide of Wayne Hennessey’s post.
Fabian Delph and Darren Bent produced some good link-up play that saw the hosts look threatening at times, while veteran Emil Heskey produced the best chance of the opening period when he latched onto a Gabriel Agbonlahor cross only to see his sliding effort skid wide.
With Wolves struggling to build any momentum, Villa continued to attack in the second half, with Agbonlahor managing to force a good save from Hennessey.
The visitors were trying to play possession football to earn a brief respite from the pressure, and the tactic helped them see off the difficult period and get themselves back into the game.
Kevin Doyle and Jamie O’Hara linked well to create a threat on the Villa goal, but defender Stephen Warnock stepped in and put an end to a potentially dangerous situation.
With 20 minutes remaining, N’Zogbia had a chance to give his side the lead as he was left unmarked in the area, but his shot went wide and the game remained deadlocked.
Bent was at the centre of Villa’s last notable foray on goal but his cross was parried by Hennessey with Agbonlahor waiting to pounce.
