Goals from Matthew Taylor and Johan Elmander secured Bolton all three points to keep them within touching distance of a Champions League qualifying spot.
Taylor was smartly set up by the hard-working Chung-Yong Lee just before the break while Elmander scored late on to ensure victory for Owen Coyle’s men.
West Brom may have dominated for spells, but it was the hosts who opened the scoring just before half-time.
Matthew Taylor was unselfish when bearing down on goal, cutting to Chung-Yong Lee, who kept the ball alive and eventually passed it back to Taylor to put Wanderers 1-0 up.
Lee was forced out to the by-line but did well to keep the ball in play before finding his team-mate, who powered the ball through goalkeeper Scott Carson to score on 40 minutes.
They say a team is most vulnerable having just scored – and West Brom attempted to take advantage of this, battering the hosts in an intense 10-minute spell of non-stop pressure to try and level the scores.
Chris Brunt went very close when his header crashed off the woodwork and bounced to safety, only for West Brom to immediately mount another attack which saw Brunt again on the ball in a dangerous position but he was only able to fire into the side netting.
James Morrison had a goal-scoring opportunity snatched away from him when Jussi Jaaskelainen dived at his feet.
Morrison had been cleverly set up by Peter Obemwingie but was unable to put away his shot quickly enough.
Finally, in the 86th minute, West Brom were punished for not taking their chances when Nathan Elmander charged into the penalty area and looked to play the ball across the box into space.
His attempted pass bounced off a defender’s legs straight back to him and the Swede skillfully found the back of the net from close range.
