Bolton ran riot as Owen Coyle’s men thumped Chris Hughton’s Newcastle 5-1 to move up to fourth in the English Premier League.
Hughton’s men toppled Sunderland 5-1 a few weeks ago but this time they were on the receiving end of the mauling, with Kevin Davies and Elmander both netting twice.
Davies put Bolton ahead from the spot before Lee Chung-Yong doubled the lead and in-form striker Elmander’s sublime third added to Newcastle misery.
Andy Carroll responded for Newcastle but it wasn’t enough as Bolton continued their fine season.
Elmander’s second of the match 15 minutes from time made the game safe and Davies added a penalty late on. Hughton’s woe was complete when Fabricio Coloccini saw red late on for an elbow on Elmander.
This was a tale of two in-form strikers, with Elmander’s stunning strike at Wolves enough to lift Bolton to fifth a week ago while Carroll earned his first England cap for Newcastle on Wednesday.
But it was Davies – ditched by Fabio Capello after just one England appearance – who put the hosts ahead. Former Bolton hero Kevin Nolan handled in the box and Davies slammed home the penalty to give Coyle’s men a 20th-minute lead.
One-time Bolton loan man Danny Guthrie found space 10 minutes later and should have done a lot better but he took too long with the opportunity and the home side managed to clear, as Carroll looked on in frustration.
Chung-Yong deepened the gloom for Newcastle on 39 minutes after the visitors failed to clear the danger after Matt Taylor’s shot hit the woodwork.
Hughton’s side had no answer to a rampant home attack and Elmander’s finish on 50 minutes made the game safe.
Carroll almost immediately responded as he poked home to reduce the deficit but it wasn’t enough for lacklustre Newcastle.
And Elmander added another with 15 minutes to go to continue his fine form for Bolton before Davies’ penalty made it even more embarrassing for Hughton in the dying minutes.
