A Ramires brace and goals from Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba helped Chelsea to a 4-1 defeat of Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.

Andy Williams got the sole reply from promoted Swansea while a moment of madness that resulted in a first-half red card for Torres marred the Spaniard’s continuing resurgence.

Raul Meireles blasted a wild volley over the bar from outside the area to set the tone of the match as Chelsea looked to get on top early.

After seeing an earlier penalty shout waved away by the referee, Torres got onto the scoresheet in the 29th minute after fine build-up play from Juan Mata.

Chelsea began to look more convincing in attack and the Swansea defence caved in amid the constant pressure, Ramires firing through Michel Vorm’s legs for the hosts’ second.

In the 40th minute, Mark Gower had the ball on the left side as Torres came sliding in with studs showing, an offence referee Mike Riley deemed worthy of a straight red card.

Brandon Rodgers brought on Wayne Routledge at the start of the second half hoping to provide some width and make the extra man count for the visitors.

It had a positive effect with Swansea having several chances just after the interval, Ashley Williams having the best of them when his header on goal was cleared off the line by Ramires.

Chelsea sealed the match in the 77th minute when Ramires controlled a Jose Bosingwa cross and finished brilliantly for his second of the match.

But Swansea continued to push forward and were rewarded five minutes from time when Williams ghosted in at the back post and headed home a consolation.

However, Chelsea restored the three-goal lead when substitute Drogba finished well after good work from Florent Malouda.
