Jermaine Beckford’s late wonder-goal claimed all three points for Everton in their 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday.

The 27-year-old weaved his way through a forest of defenders before smashing home in the 75th minute to finish a miserable season for Chelsea.

Fernando Torres was booed from his first touch – the Goodison Park crowd never give a former Liverpool player the warmest of receptions.

The hosts nearly got their noses ahead with eight minutes gone when Phil Jagielka climbed highest to crash a header against the crossbar.

Nicholas Anelka was brightest for the visitors but was limited to half chances by a mean Everton defence.

Everton had a 20th-minute penalty shout when Leon Osman was felled by Alex, but referee Peter Walton ruled that the Brazil defender got a toe on the ball.

Chelsea’s best chance in the opening period was also a header – Florent Malouda’s cross was nodded over by that man Alex from close range.

Everton had to play more than an hour with 10 men as their young player of the year Seamus Coleman was dismissed for a second yellow just after half time.

But that did not deter the home side as they looked to end the season with a flourish and the lively Beckford drew a smart save from Cech after wriggling free from Alex.

And the former Leeds man was awarded for his energetic display when he hit the winner 15 minutes from time.

Beckford danced his way past four Chelsea defenders to smash home his eighth Premier League goal of the season.

Despite a late Frank Lampard attempt, there was was no way back for Chelsea, who looked sluggish all afternoon and were well beaten.
