Fulham climbed to 13th in the Premier League table and sent West Brom into the relegation zone with an emphatic 3-0 victory on Tuesday.
Scott Carson’s error set Fulham on their way to a crucial three points as goals from Simon Davies, Clint Dempsey and Brede Hangeland lifted Mark Hughes’ side out of the bottom three. The hosts were deserved victors at Craven Cottage but were struggling to make any real impression on West Brom’s makeshift defence until Carson allowed Davies’ long-range effort to escape his grasp moments before half-time.And the visitors’ fifth successive defeat was sealed when woeful defending allowed Dempsey and Hangeland to score almost identical goals from Davies’ corners either side of the hour mark. The result leaves Roberto Di Matteo’s side just two points clear of the drop zone as their horrific run of form continues. Di Matteo was forced to make wholesale changes to his defence due to injury, and that was nearly exploited within four minutes by Diomansy Kamara as he forced a smart save from Carson.Yet West Brom responded impressively as David Stockdale saved well from Jerome Thomas. But the hosts wasted a glorious chance five minutes before the break as Carson made the first of his errors, getting nowhere near Davies’ corner as Hangeland somehow headed wide with the goal at his mercy. And the break Fulham so desperately needed arrived in injury-time as Carson failed to deal with Davies’ 30-yard effort, deflecting the ball into the top corner despite it soaring straight at him.The goal rocked West Brom as Damien Duff cracked a low drive inches past the far post just after the restart, and on 56 minutes the lead was doubled. The visiting defence went missing from Davies’ corner, allowing Dempsey to rise above Hangeland and find the back of the net with a powerful header for his seventh of the season. And the third was virtually a carbon copy as another Davies corner saw Hangeland arrive unmarked in the middle to head unopposed past Carson from close range. That goal essentially ended the game as a contest and Fulham played out the final 25 minutes without alarm to claim their fourth league win of the season and put a rest to talk of Hughes losing his job.
