Mikel Arteta helped Everton to come from behind to beat Newcastle United and earn consecutive league wins for the first time since October.
After 15 minutes, the English Premier League encounter burst into life when Spanish midfielder Arteta was given time and space to run down the left.
When he stepped inside Steven Taylor, his right foot shot looked destined for the top corner but he found Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper more than equal to the effort.
Newcastle took the lead five minutes later when Mike Williamson turned on the edge of the box to feed Kevin Nolan.
His left-foot drive was parried straight into the path of Leon Best by Tim Howard and the striker headed into an empty net for his sixth goal of the season.
Everton were soon back on level terms.
Arteta again had the freedom of St James’ Park, cutting in from the left wing to pick out Leon Osman, who simply passed the ball into the bottom corner from twelve yards out.
Five minutes later and Everton had turned the game around completely, with Leighton Baines whipping in a free kick from the left and Phil Jagielka converting at the far post.
On the stroke of half-time, Newcastle defender Mike Williamson had a glorious chance to level the scores again but the he placed his shot wide of the post from just three yards out.
Early in the second half, Harper pulled off another fine save, this time denying Jermaine Beckford after his fierce shot was headed for the back of the net.
Somehow, the goalkeeper managed to tip the ball round the post.
Best thought he had won a point for the home side with ten minutes to go, but referee Howard Webb rightly disallowed the goal for a push.
