Premier League predictions

Not a pretty sight

SATURDAY 2ND OCTOBER 2010

Birmingham v Everton
Birmingham haven’t looked great in their last couple of games and Alex McLeish will just be beginning to feel a little concerned. What he needs is a home game against the bottom club.

Oh look, that’s exactly what he has got. However, that bottom club isn’t Blackpool or Wigan or Wolves, it is Everton. The fact is that even though they are bottom, we all know that Everton are not a bad side.

I don’t think this will be a high scoring affair. Birmingham have scored twice in three home games and Everton have matched that feat away.

Soccernews prediction: 0-0

Stoke v Blackburn
Stoke’s worrying start to the season is no longer worrying after a draw and two wins in their last three games. They still don’t look to be the same fearsome force they were over the last two seasons but they will now be very hard to beat at home.

Up until last week I would have stated the simple fact that Blackburn don’t win away. However they did get a last minute winner at Blackpool to disprove that theory. Could it be that they have got a taste for it and will get two in a row? No.

Soccernews prediction: 2-1

Sunderland v Manchester United
Sunderland did quite well at Liverpool last week but in all truth, looking at Liverpool at the moment, that might not mean much. They are sitting pretty, well as pretty as any side managed by Steve Bruce can be, in mid-table and they look as though they are likely to stay there.

United have had a faltering start to their season but there they are once again, making progress in Europe and sitting in second place in the Premier League just three points behind the leaders. I bet lots of teams wish they could have a faltering start like that!

It’ll be tough for Fergie’s men but I fancy them to sneak a win.

Soccernews prediction: 1-2

Tottenham v Aston Villa
If Tottenham hadn’t played and won in Europe in midweek they may have been suffering from a hangover following their defeat at West Ham. As it is, they will be right back in confident mood.

Villa are back in their customary fifth position and have won two on the bounce. Just when you thought things were as good as they were going to get for them, even Emile Heskey pops up with a goal!

This could easily be the best game of the weekend.

Soccernews prediction: 2-2

West Brom v Bolton
Sixth play twelfth at The Hawthorns. Who would have thought that West Brom would be sixth and coming of the back of a win at Arsenal? Fair play to them.

Bolton are looking solid and thoroughly deserved their draw with Manchester United last week.

This could be a decent game between two decent sides. I wouldn’t have said that a few weeks ago.

Soccernews prediction: 1-1

West Ham v Fulham
A London derby between two teams in slightly different moods at the moment.

West Ham are still near the bottom but they will have been totally rejuvenated by their win over Tottenham and the return to form of Robert Green.

Fulham are still in the top half but defeat to Stoke and a lucky point at home to Everton, together with injuries to key players, will have left them feeling a bit sorry for themselves.

I think West Ham may be on something of a recovery.

Soccernews prediction: 2-1

Wigan v Wolves
OK, if you could attend any game in the Premier League, nobody would choose this one unless you are a Wolves or Wigan fan. Even some of them would probably prefer to go somewhere else!

The two teams are level on points fighting it out to avoid the last relegation place. It is really hard to see anything changing much for either side as the season progresses.

On the basis that Wolves haven’t won away and Wigan haven’t won at home, I’ll go for a boring draw.

Soccernews prediction: 0-0

SUNDAY 3RD OCTOBER 2010

Chelsea v Arsenal
A London derby between the two top London teams. Sorry about that Tottenham fans, I am just going on recent history and the league table.

Chelsea were beginning to look unbeatable and then Newcastle beat them in the Carling Cup, Manchester City beat them in the league and although they won in Europe in midweek, they were far from convincing.

Arsenal were looking really good and I thought they were serious challengers and then they got out-played and beaten by West Brom.

Both teams need to prove a point and I think the extra power Chelsea possess means it will be them who does so.

Soccernews prediction: 2-0

Liverpool v Blackpool
A relegation six-pointer at Anfield! Seriously though, it is fifteenth against sixteenth, so I might be right.

Liverpool are looking fairly clueless at the moment and would take any win from anywhere. Blackpool have done a Hull, in that they started well but reality is beginning to set in.

I’m going to predict a Liverpool win. Anything else and it is difficult to see where Liverpool would go from there.

Soccernews prediction: 2-0

Manchester City v Newcastle
Anyone who thought that Manchester City were not serious contenders this year should have a look at last week’s game and the league table. They beat everyone’s champions elect Chelsea and despite not having an amazing start, they are fourth in the league.

Newcastle are up and down like a yo-yo. You really don’t know what you are going to get from them. I suspect that what we will get from this week is a defeat.

Soccernews prediction: 2-1
