This week’s predictions come to you from a broken man. Last week I confidently predicted that I would get almost all of the results right after a disappointing week the time before. Last week I got just two results right and I am beginning to realise why I have never made my fortune by winning the football pools!
This week is probably my last chance to redeem myself before I admit defeat and finally accept that I am quite useless when it comes to predicting scores.
If I get less than half right this week, I shall be visiting my Doctor to get some happy pills!

Surely I can’t get this one wrong! Chelsea were stopped in their tracks by Liverpool last week but went on to show their class by putting Premier League upstarts Hull City in their place in midweek. Despite their defeat last weekend, Chelsea are still a formidable side,
Sunderland were on a high after their first derby day win for almost thirty years last week, but a tame defeat at Stoke on Wednesday was more like what we have come to expect.
There can only be one winner.
Soccernews prediction: Chelsea 3-0 Sunderland
With David Moyes signed up, a hard fought point against Manchester United last week and an away victory in midweek, Everton might just be returning to the form that most people expected them to show before the season started.
Fulham are playing well but were not picking up many points prior to this last week. Now with four points in two games and with Andy Johnson finding his goalscoring boots, things are looking better for them.
I think Everton might just have too much for them though.
Soccernews prediction: Everton 2-0 Fulham
Another one I surely can’t get wrong! Hull City have been magnificent so far this season and I truly believe they will be alright in this league. They were given a bit of a lesson by Chelsea in midweek and they could have done without following that up with a trip to Old Trafford.
United are looking ominous at the moment and Berbatov, Rooney and Ronaldo will fancy their chances of causing problems in this game.
Soccernews prediction: Manchester United 3-0 Hull
Middlesbrough are an unpredictable team. One week they look as though Gareth Southgate has moulded them into a well organised and difficult to beat side who offer a real threat when they go forward. The next week they look like Rag Bag Rovers.
West Ham are having a tough time. After the initial euphoria of Gianfranco Zola’s arrival the reality of why they needed a change of manager in the first place has hit home. I fancy they might pick something up here although it will largely depend on which Middlesbrough turn up.
Soccernews prediction: Middlesbrough 0-1 West Ham
Tony Adams’ first home game in charge sees a badly out of form Wigan going down to Fratton Park. His first game saw a very good performance at Liverpool but no points. He would undoubtedly accept any sort of performance today as long as he gets the three points.
Wigan were looking good with the strike pairing of Amr Zaki and Emile Heskey causing chaos wherever they went. Now, after a 4-0 defeat at home to Villa and a 2-0 defeat at Fulham they find themselves in the bottom three.
It’s not difficult to see where the problems lie. Titus Bramble anyone?
Soccernews prediction: Portsmouth 2-0 Wigan
This is surely my third banker! Stoke ground out a good win against Sunderland in midweek but they will find Arsenal a totally different proposition.
The Gunners will be smarting from throwing away a two goal lead against Tottenham on Wednesday and if you believe the newspapers, harsh words have been said since that game. I expect them to turn it on against Stoke and show everyone that they are still very much in the title race.
Soccernews prediction: Stoke 0-4 Arsenal
Tottenham under Harry Redknapp with four points from his two games are a very different team to the one from a couple of weeks ago. The personnel are the same but the team has changed beyond all recognition.
Liverpool may have suddenly realised that they are genuine title contenders and that could explain their less than impressive performance in the 1-0 win over Portsmouth on Wednesday.
Although Liverpool won’t be looking forward to this trip as much as they would have done pre-Redknapp, they will still be good enough to win it.
Soccernews prediction: Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool
West Brom are a fine footballing side but they cannot score. It doesn’t matter how well they defend or how pretty their football is, if they can’t put the ball in the net they are going to be in trouble.
Blackburn are having an inconsistent season but they looked really good against Villa in midweek despite losing.
I just can’t help but feel the best West Brom can hope for is a 0-0. I don’t think they’ll get it.
Soccernews prediction: West Brom 0-2 Blackburn
Sunday 2nd November 2008
Bolton are not really very good I’m afraid. They’ve dropped into the bottom three and it is hard to see them being anywhere else for the remainder of the season.
Manchester City are brilliant one week and poor the next. Bolton will try to turn this into a battle and the Samba connection at City might not like that. Having said that, I think the visitors will have too much quality all round the pitch for Bolton.
Soccernews prediction: Bolton 1-3 Manchester City
Monday 3rd November 2008
Newcastle have certainly got a lot more fight under Joe Kinnear but they are still struggling to find any real quality. They are by no means the ‘walk over’ they were before Kinnear arrived, but they’re still not great.
Aston Villa have been really good for most of the season. They showed real progress by playing pretty poorly against Blackburn the other day and still picking up the three points.
Villa won’t help the mood at Newcastle too much on Monday.
Soccernews prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Aston Villa
