Premier League Predictions – Chelsea and Liverpool to march on

As I have the worst track record in history when it comes to predicting the scores and results in games, I thought I’d have another go to show you just how bad I really am. I’ve seen the experts do it and they get nearly all of them wrong so I can’t be any worse than them can I?

OK, here goes with this weekends games in the Premier League:

Saturday, 20 September 2008

  • Blackburn v Fulham, 15:00
  • Under Paul Ince Blackburn started the season looking good. With Santa Cruz banging in the goals and a well organised defence in front of the former England goalkeeper, what could go wrong? Well, only one point from their last three games and four goals conceded in both of the last two for starters.

Fulham look like a totally different side from the one that played last season. That is mainly because they are a totally different side. They look like a pretty safe mid-table side to me.

    Soccer News prediction; 1-1

  • Bolton v Arsenal, 17:30
  • Everyone has had their say about Arsenal. No leader on the field, no strength in depth, no killer instinct, no big signings, not up for the battle, etc, etc. Since losing their first game they are unbeaten and put four past Blackburn last week. They came ever so close to an historic season last time and they will be there or thereabouts this time around as well.

Bolton are, well, they’re Bolton. What you see is what you get. What you see is a side that are going to struggle and a side that will lose to Arsenal.

    Soccer News prediction; 0-2

  • Liverpool v Stoke, 15:00
  • Liverpool are looking pretty good. Joint top of the Premier League, victory over Manchester United for the first time since 2004 and a reasonably comfortable win in Europe. Things are going too well. It must be time for Rafa to rotate everyone and for Liverpool to lose a seemingly simple home game! He might rotate some, but not enough to lose this one.

Stoke are battling away but their ultimate lack of quality will hold them back how ever hard they try.

    Soccer News prediction; 2-0

  • Sunderland v Middlesbrough, 12:45
  • Bit of a derby this one although I suspect both of these teams count Newcastle as more of a rival. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear some joint singing between the two sets of fans celebrating the unrest just down the road.

Both teams have started in a sort of OK manner but neither will be completely happy. Sunderland got a decent point at Wigan last week and Middlesbrough went down 2-1 at Portsmouth.

Can’t see this one being a classic as both teams will be desperate not to lose.

    Soccer News prediction; 0-0

  • West Ham v Newcastle, 15:00
  • On the one hand we have West Ham, decent start, away win last week, new legendary manager who the players will be keen to impress. On the other hand we have Newcastle, poor start, home defeat last week, no manager and a man in temporary charge who doesn’t want to be there.

On paper this looks like an absolute home win banker. On grass, I think it will be just the same.

    Soccer News prediction; 2-0

    Sunday, 21 September 2008

  • Chelsea v Man Utd, 14:00
  • The big one sees leaders Chelsea take on fourteenth placed Manchester United. United will be keen to avoid defeat as it is likely that picking up no points would see them fall into the relegation zone!

Chelsea have started the season in ominous form for all of the others and they look to be a pretty formidable outfit. I’m sure Manchester United will come good at some stage but at times this season they have looked like the Dog and Duck pub team!

I can see this one being a little embarrassing for Sir Alex and his men.

    Soccer News prediction; 3-0

  • Hull v Everton, 15:00
  • Sitting in fifth place it is fair to say that Hull have surprised a few people. I would guess that Hull themselves are amongst the most surprised.

Everton have had a mixed start but news that they may have secured the services of David Moyes for another five years together with the return of Tim Cahill will have given everyone at Goodison a lift.

Hull may continue to surprise us but I think Everton will have too much for them.

    Soccer News prediction; 1-2

  • Man City v Portsmouth, 15:00
  • Two teams who would have started the season with an eye on achieving a top six finish. For Portsmouth that is still the target and a possibility. For Manchester City the goalposts have moved somewhat.

These are two decent sides who have made similar starts. On the balance of probabilities you have to just give it to the home team.

    Soccer News prediction; 1-0

  • Tottenham v Wigan, 15:00
  • Tottenham got their first win of the season on Thursday night in an unconvincing 2-1 victory over Wisla Krakow in the Uefa Cup. That result may ‘kick start’ their season or alternatively it might just show that they are not very good at the moment. Sitting rock bottom of the league the fans will be desperate for a win. If that desperation reaches then pitch, the players could find things really difficult.

Steve Bruce seems to have moulded Wigan into a competitive outfit who can match most of the teams in the league. Have they ever been to White Hart Lane as favourites before?

    Soccer News prediction; 1-1

  • West Brom v Aston Villa, 12:00
  • Another local derby. West Brom are looking a little fragile and a home defeat by West Ham last week will have been another blow to their confidence.

Aston Villa are looking like a top five team at the moment and they will be relishing this game.

A great atmosphere with a hostile crowd awaits Villa but I think they will have just enough to class to in the day.

    Soccer News prediction; 1-2

I agree Chelsea is unstoppable this season but 3-0 is a little over the top. I say 3-1 Man U is going to fight like hell. Didier going to show us what he’s made of, watch out Man U!

Haba! 3-0’s too outrageous, but I’m sure Man U is leaving the bridge defeated – very sure of that.I’ll say 2-0 or 2-1.

Liverpool’s getting a draw against Stoke – let’s bet it

well chelsea are like an umstopable beast Didier might score a hatrick and i say what a way it will be for him to come from a 3 month injury to reclaim his place in chelsea’s first 11.i cant stop imagining him slicing a defence splitting pass from Deco, another cross from Ballack and last but not least of many goals that are going to come a good pass from Kalou or Essin for him to just put the icing on the chelsea cake.

      i love chelsea.

Man United Chelsea: 3-0. Just fixing your mistake. You must have missed that one.
