Premier League predictions – Chelsea to win the big one?

lrg-140-didier_drogbaSaturday 3rd October

  • Bolton v Tottenham
  • Gary Megson is a really dour character who even his own fans find it hard to warm to. He may not be an immediately likeable character but you can’t deny his ability as a manager. Once again he is slowly but surely edging Bolton to a position of mid-table respectability.

Tottenham are still looking like a fine team although their injury problems at the back are a serious issue. They still sit in the top four and on current form they deserve to be there.

Bolton won’t make it easy for Harry Redknapp’s men but I fancy the away side to have just enough to take the points.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-2

  • Burnley v Birmingham
  • Home form has become absolutely crucial for Burnley. The three wins they have had at Turf Moor take on massive significance when you see their away results of 0-2, 0-3, 0-4 and 0-5. They cannot afford to slip up at home or they will certainly be in trouble.

Birmingham are not a bad side but they simply do not score enough goals. In the top league you can’t survive without goals.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-0

  • Hull v Wigan
  • It is hard to remember a team in such a dramatic freefall as Hull. Two wins in this calendar year tell a very sorry story and they are no longer just being beaten, they are being destroyed by teams.

Wigan are an up and down side but they will be so full of confidence after their win over Chelsea last week that I fear for Hull. Luckily for the home team I don’t think Wigan will destroy them. That doesn’t mean that they won’t beat them though.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-2

  • Manchester United v Sunderland
  • United are where they believe they should always be. They’re at the top of the table. They have done it without often playing well but people say that is the sign of a great team. They have two wins out of two in Europe without looking terribly impressive. If they do start to play well, they could easily have another great season.

Sunderland are good going forward but look shaky at the back. It is hard to imagine United not being able to take advantage of that.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-0

  • Wolves v Portsmouth
  • Wolves are slipping towards the bottom of the table but anyone who saw their 5-2 defeat at Sunderland last week will know that they actually played quite well. They are a decent, ball playing side and if they can add just a little in both penalty areas they will be alright.

Portsmouth are playing better but they have developed the habit of losing which is very difficult to shake off. I think they’ll get a point here but if they don’t. it is almost impossible to see them surviving.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

    Sunday 4th October

  • Arsenal v Blackburn
  • It’s the same old story at the Emirates at the moment. Great football but they don’t always turn that football into goals. When they do they are as good as anyone in the league.

Blackburn will battle and hassle and fight, but they just won’t have enough quality to compete.

    SoccerNews prediction: 3-1

  • Chelsea v Liverpool
  • In the game of the weekend second plays third in one of those games that Sky TV annoyingly calls ‘Grand Slam’. These two teams have had differing seasons so far in so much as Chelsea started really well and Liverpool started really badly whereas Liverpool have been good of late and Chelsea have faltered.

Chelsea are three points to the good at the moment and whilst both sides performed poorly in Europe in midweek they did win their game whereas Liverpool were soundly beaten. I fancy Chelsea to just nick this one and hurt Liverpool’s Premier League title dreams once again.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-0

  • Everton v Stoke
  • Everton have edged up to ninth place and look set for another top six or seven season. Stoke are firmly ensconced in mid-table and will be very difficult to shift from there.

Everton will just have the edge in a close game here as Stoke are still not quite the team away from home that they are at home.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-1

  • West Ham v Fulham
  • West Ham find themselves in the bottom three and Fulham are just one place above them. It might soon become the time when we stop saying what good jobs Gianfranco Zola and Roy Hodgson have done at the clubs and realize that they may be in for a battle at the wrong end of the table.

I think they will both be fine as they have far more quality than some of the other teams in the league, but they do need to start getting some points. I think they’ll get one each here.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

    Monday 5th October

  • Aston Villa v Manchester City
  • The last game of this round sees a battle between two teams who think they have a chance of breaking into the top four. Villa just missed out last season after looking for a long while as though they could do it. This time around they are being a little inconsistent but are nicely placed just behind the front runners.

City are the team most likely to achieve the breakthrough however and they will be at the top if they win their game in hand and this one. I think they will send a message to Villa in this one.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-3
