Premier League Predictions for round seven – Chelsea to slip up?

Last week I got six results correct and two absolutely correct scores. Not bad really, although I say so myself! I’m not in any way competitive but I thought I should just mention that the BBC’s football expert Mark Lawrenson got four results right and only one perfect score. Just thought I’d mention it 🙂

On to this weeks predictions;

Saturday 4th October 2008

  • Blackburn v Manchester United
  • Paul Ince, the self proclaimed ‘Guvnor’ takes on the real ‘Guvnor’ for the first time when Fergie takes his team to Ewood Park.

United are picking up a little and they played well against Bolton last week and then again in Europe in midweek. Blackburn have won two on the trot to put a little shaky spell behind them as well.

This won’t be easy for United but I think they’ll just edge it.

    Soccernews prediction; 1-2

  • Sunderland v Arsenal
  • Sunderland have a better start than they did last season and they looked a decent outfit in their narrow defeat at high flying Aston Villa last week.

For Arsenal, last weekend was one they will want to quickly forget. The memories of the 2-1 defeat at home to Hull were dimmed slightly by their comprehensive demolition of Porto in the week and I suspect will be almost entirely eradicated by another demolition today.

    Soccernews prediction; 0-3

  • West Brom v Fulham
  • Twelfth take on fifteenth at the Hawthorns. West Brom have started pretty well and they play some nice football. Fulham have lost a couple of games that they shouldn’t have done and for that reason, their fans might still be a little concerned. They are much stronger than last season, but that isn’t saying a lot!

    Soccernews prediction; 2-2

  • Wigan v Middlesbrough
  • In Amr Zaki I think Wigan have unearthed a real star. Whether he can consistently reproduce the sort of wonderful all action performance he produced against Manchester City last week is yet to be discovered, but if he can, he will be massive.

Middlesbrough fans must be getting a bit bored with hearing how well everyone thinks they played and that they were unlucky to lose.

I think Middlesbrough will play quite well at Wigan and be unlucky to lose.

    Soccernews prediction; 2-0

    Sunday 5th October 2008

  • Chelsea v Aston Villa
  • The long unbeaten home record that Chelsea proudly possess will come under enormous pressure when the exciting Villa side arrive at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Chelsea will be without Joe Cole, Deco, Michael Essien, Ricardo Carvalho and Didier Drogba. There are also slight concerns about Alex and John Terry.

Aston Villa are flying and people are just beginning to wonder if they might be good enough to split the top four. This is a good test to see how far they have come. I think they will more than meet the challenge.

    Soccernews prediction; 1-2

  • Everton v Newcastle
  • This really is a battle between two clubs who are totally down in the dumps. In the last couple of weeks Everton have lost to their bitter rivals Liverpool and been dumped out of the Carling Cup and the Uefa Cup. They have an unhappy manager who doesn’t seem keen to sign a new contract and players who aren’t performing.

Newcastle just wish they only had Everton’s problems!

It’ll be Newcastle who are the more depressed club after this one.

    Soccernews prediction; 2-0

  • Manchester City v Liverpool
  • Manchester City are still blowing hot and cold. A fantastic 6-0 destruction of Portsmouth was followed by a limp defeat at Wigan. As has so often been the case in the past, it seems to be a matter of which Manchester City turn up on the day.

Liverpool might just be serious title challengers for the first time in a long while. They are winning, but not playing great. If they start to perform, they could be a frightening prospect.

    Soccernews prediction; 0-1

  • Portsmouth v Stoke City
  • Portsmouth nearly threw away a two goal Uefa Cup advantage on Thursday night but they rallied well and qualified in the end. That victory following on from the win over Tottenham has got them back on track after the humiliations against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Stoke have battled well, worked hard and done themselves proud so far, but they find themselves in the bottom three and will find it very difficult to get out.

    Soccernews prediction; 2-0

  • Tottenham v Hull
  • Well, a high flying team take on one that is rock bottom. What odds could you have got at the start of the season that in reality that sentence would be that way round?

Both sides have defied the experts so far as Hull sit sixth and full of confidence after their win at the Emirates. Tottenham are still rock bottom with just two points. Their stumbling aggregate win over Wisla Krakow will have done little to ease the mood of doom and gloom at the Lane.

Could this be Juande Ramos’s last game in charge? If it is, I think he’ll bow out with a victory.

    Soccernews prediction; 1-0

  • West Ham v Bolton
  • West Ham have won both league games under Gianfranco Zola and he does seem to have revitalised the whole place.

Bolton started quite well but no win in four including three straight defeats has left them looking at another relegation battle. This time it might just be one that they can’t win.

    Soccernews prediction; 3-0
