Premier League predictions – Liverpool to put Hull in their place?

How did I do last week? I got five right. That’s 50%. My best for ages. OK, it’s not much to gloat about, I know! Let’s see if we can do even better this week 🙂

Saturday 13th December 2008

  • Aston Villa v Bolton
  • Villa are on the crest of a wave. They sit in fifth place just one point behind Arsenal and are coming off the back of that incredible win at Everton last week. That win opened up a six point gap on the team most likely to challenge them for fifth place.

Bolton lost to Chelsea at home last week but they have won their last three away games. To the surprise of many, they are sitting in mid-table.

Villa will continue to pile the pressure on Arsenal with a win in this one.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-1

  • Liverpool v Hull
  • Liverpool are top of the league and last week they eventually had a comfortable win at Blackburn. Hull are in sixth place (still can’t believe I’m saying that) and they beat Middlesbrough last time out.

Who would have thought this would look like a tough game for Liverpool?

Hull have to get defeated in the way we all expected them to at some point and I think this might be it.

    SoccerNews prediction: 3-0

  • Manchester City v Everton
  • Fourteenth play eighth at Eastlands in a game that is possibly the most difficult to predict this week. Manchester City are still sorting themselves out and they can look like champs or chumps from week to week.

Everton are starting to get it together and they played really well against Villa last week but conceded three goals at home and lost.

I think Everton will probably look for a point from this one and might just about get it.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

  • Middlesbrough v Arsenal
  • Two of the most unpredictable teams in the league. Middlesbrough have had some good results but they may be on the verge of entering a relegation battle unless they can find some consistency.

Arsenal, well, what can you say about Arsenal? Fourth in the league and qualified in the Champions League. They can’t be that bad can they? Why do I not feel that they will get an easy victory at the Riverside then?

It’s just because Arsenal are doing nothing the easy way this season and they don’t like the Riverside much either.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

  • Stoke v Fulham
  • Stoke and Fulham are both probably doing a little better than either of them thought they would be doing at this stage of the season. They sit in thirteenth and ninth place respectively and must be relieved to see so many teams below them in the table.

It could still turn out to be a relegation battle for both sides as despite being ninth, Fulham are actually only five points above the drop zone. For Stoke the gap is only four points.

I think Stoke may just overpower Fulham to scrape another valuable home win.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-0

  • Sunderland v West Brom
  • Two struggling teams in the bottom three take each other on at The Stadium of Light. Managerless Sunderland will be slightly buouyed by their brave effort in the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford last week and West Brom got a battling point against Portsmouth.

In truth, it would be the most sensible option to predict that both teams lose! In front of their own fans and with a new manager about to join them, I reckon Sunderland will just scrape it.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-0

  • Tottenham v Manchester United
  • A big test for Harry and his resurgent Tottenham team here. They have won nine in twelve under Redknapp but Tottenham will have to be at their very best to keep that sort of run going.

United are unbeaten in eight in all competitions and you have to go back to September to find a defeat before that.

These games are usually entertaining and often have goals.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-3

  • Wigan v Blackburn
  • Mid-table Wigan lost to Arsenal last time out but that was their only Premier League defeat in six games.

Blackburn lost to Liverpool and have lost to almost everyone they’ve played for some time!

Many pundits are predicting that should Blackburn lose this one, manager Paul Ince will be on his way. I reckon he might as well get the car started.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-1

    Sunday 14th December 2008

  • Chelsea v West Ham
  • Chelsea made hard work of qualifying through the group stage in the Champions League and they have lost twice at home already this season. They might sit in second place but everything in the Chelsea garden is not rosy at this present time.

Having said that, the Chelsea garden is considerably rosier than the West Ham one!

The return of Zola to Stamford Bridge is the main talking point, but I fear that he will leave his old hunting ground with nothing.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-0

  • Portsmouth v Newcastle
  • Is it me or do the eleven players playing under Tony Adams look less good than the same eleven did under Harry Redknapp?

Portsmouth are looking OK in seventh place in the table but I have an uneasy feeling for them.

Newcastle have made a recovery of sorts under Joe Kinnear but they have only won two in ten under his stewardship and are still in deep trouble. I think it’ll be two in eleven after this one.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-0
