Premier League predictions – United back to the top, but only for 24 hours?

Saturday 6th February

  • Bolton v Fulham
  • Bolton are in a relegation scrap and new manager Owen Coyle knows that they need to pick up points in games such as this one.

Fulham have an awful injury list and their win at home to Portsmouth on Wednesday was their first in a while.

I fancy Coyle to engineer a second home win on the bounce and raise the morale around the Reebok.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-1

  • Burnley v West Ham
  • A relegation six-pointer as second from bottom Burnley take on West Ham who sit four places higher but only have one point more.

Burnley haven’t won yet under Brian Laws and they will be keen to show that their good home form can continue under the new man.

West Ham are a strange team who don’t always fire on all cylinders but can look like a decent side. I think it’ll be Gianfranco Zola smiling come the final whistle of this one.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-2

  • Hull v Manchester City
  • Not many people expected Hull to get a point against Chelsea in the week and not many would have expected them to match the Blues all over the pitch. That is exactly what happened and they have a great chance here to prove that it wasn’t a one-off.

City are a well organised side now and they have plenty of goals in the team. They will have to work hard against a determined Hull team, but if they do, they will win.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-2

  • Liverpool v Everton
  • The Merseyside derby is always a difficult one to predict. Even when one side is going well and the other is struggling, form tends to go by the wayside.

As it stands, Liverpool are fifth and putting together some sort of form and Everton are ninth, climbing the table and playing well.

Both teams will fancy their chances but I expect it to be passionate, feisty, entertaining, but ultimately goalless.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-0

  • Manchester United v Portsmouth
  • A revitalised Manchester United side find themselves just two points from the top again and with Chelsea playing tomorrow, three points here would see them back at the summit. In those circumstances playing the worst team In the league should be pretty straightforward.

Portsmouth are the worst team in the league. They are cast adrift at the bottom and are in absolute turmoil on and off the pitch. Their fourth owner of the season turned up this week and it remains to be seen if, like the others, he has no money.

The only way United won’t win is if they are too complacent. Sir Alex won’t allow that to happen.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-0

  • Stoke v Blackburn
  • Two teams who could have been in trouble but have made their way into comfortable mid-table. They both play what could be called an ‘old fashioned’ type of English football that sees the ball in the opposition penalty area quite a lot but without much class.

They are both managed by dogged and talented managers in Tony Pulis and Sam Allardyce and they have both created teams in their own image.

The game may not be exciting but it will have incident.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

  • Sunderland v Wigan
  • Two poor sides on poor runs. It is possible this will be a poor game. You have to feel sorry for the poor fans and the poor managers as they watch poor players struggling to pick up some points.

I think it will be poor.

    SoccerNews prediction: 0-0

  • Tottenham v Aston Villa
  • Two of the pretenders for fourth place go head to head at White Hart Lane. Tottenham currently hold the precious fourth place but Villa are just two places and two points behind with a game in hand.

I suspect that these two exciting teams may just cancel each other out which will be great news for Manchester City and Liverpool.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-1

    Sunday 7th February

  • Birmingham v Wolves
  • This one is a Midlands derby and will be played in a raucous and intimidating atmosphere. Birmingham have lost just once in sixteen games and will be absolutely full of confidence.

Wolves are in a relegation scrap and can’t afford too many more defeats.

Birmingham don’t score many but they’ll get enough to win this one.

    SoccerNews prediction: 1-0

  • Chelsea v Arsenal
  • Chelsea will be smarting from their draw at Hull and all the publicity about John Terry and others. Arsenal will be smarting from the footballing lesson they were given by Manchester United last week.

So we have two hurt teams who will be determined to show that they have what it takes to win the Premier League.

They are both good but Chelsea are simply too strong, physically, for the talented but light-weight Arsenal side.

    SoccerNews prediction: 2-0
