Jermaine Jenas could make his first start for Aston Villa against Norwich on Saturday following his off-season loan move from Tottenham.
The 28-year-old midfielder has been sidelined with thigh and ankle problems since his move to Villa Park, a period he described as ‘very frustrating’.
“It was heartbreaking. It’s been a real, real test of mental strength,” Jenas said.
“I can’t wait to run out at Villa Park and hear the crowd chanting. If I’m involved in any way this weekend – starting or coming off the bench – I will be more than grateful to be out there playing football and contributing.”
Villa sit ninth in the table, one spot behind opponents Norwich, having won just one of their past three outings in the English Premier League.
Disappointing losses to Manchester City and West Brom were followed by a 2-2 draw at Sunderland on Saturday, a game Villa lead twice and should have wrapped up if not for Darren Bent’s glaring late miss.
The Midlands club will be without Barry Bannan for the clash after the 21-year-old Scot was suspended by the club while they carry out an investigation into the player’s involvement in a suspected drink-driving incident.
Norwich, flying high in eighth position, are currently the highest of the three newly promoted clubs, will look to build on spirited draws away to Liverpool and a 3-3 thriller at home to Blackburn last Saturday.
Grant Holt’s stoppage-time penalty recued a precious point for the Canaries after they had gone 3-1 down.
Last year’s Championship runners-up have lost just once in their past six Premier League fixtures – a 2-0 reverse to Manchester United – and showed they are more than capable of scoring against more fancied opponents.
Canaries boss Paul Lambert praised forward Holt in the week after his pair of timely goals rescued points against both Liverpool and Blackburn.
“I’ve been here two and-a-half years or something and it’s been like that from day one – never give up – and it’s amazing what that can do for you,” Lambert said.
