Liverpool will be keen to tighten their grip at the top of the table as they take on Arsenal in Saturday’s late kick-off.
The match is the first in a testing double header for Jurgen Klopp’s side, with a trip to the home of the champions coming on Thursday.
The Reds’ win over Newcastle United not only sent them clear at the summit, but also extended their unbeaten run which makes them only the fourth side not to have been beaten by the half way point of a campaign since the league’s inception.
They are also sixteen points better off than they were at this stage last term and while they have been installed as favourites to win a first title since 1990, the picture could look very different if they fail to come through this test.
Arsenal themselves have a job to do, knowing that victory will, at least temporarily see them climb into the top four.
Outsiders
Tottenham Hotspur can move to within three points of the leaders as they host a Wolverhampton Wanderers side who have gone two without victory after winning three on the bounce.
Spurs have scored eleven in their last two outings and can currently be backed at a price of 8/1 to win the division.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Fulham and Huddersfield Town battle to avoid being the side who ends 2018 at the bottom of the division.
The Cottagers go into the game one point better off than the Terriers after drawing back-to-back games while David Wagner’s side have lost six on the bounce.
Form
One point from their last three games has Cardiff City looking over their shoulder ahead of their trip to Leicester City, who are up to seventh after shock wins over Chelsea and Manchester City.
Brighton and Hove Albion ended a three-game run of defeats with a draw against Arsenal on Boxing Day and the point sees them ten points clear of trouble ahead of Saturday’s visit of Everton.
Watford were narrowly beaten by Chelsea last time out and will look to return to winning ways against a Newcastle United side who are just five points above the bottom line after winning just one of their last six league games.
Push
Chelsea will move to within a point of Manchester City if they win at Crystal Palace in Sunday’s early kick-off, with Pep Guardiola’s side travelling to Southampton later in the year.
Burnley welcome West Ham United to Turf Moor desperate for a positive result after winning just one of their last twelve games while the weekend’s action concludes at Old Trafford where Manchester United take on Bournemouth.
The Red Devils are looking to make it three league wins a succession for the first time this season, while the Cherries can move to within three points of their sixth-place opponents with victory.
