Sunderland will look to continue their revival under manager Martin O’Neill when they host Everton in the English Premier League on Boxing Day.
Since replacing Steve Bruce, O’Neill has taken charge of a rejuvenated side that has two wins in three games.
Crucial late goals have become a trademark for Sunderland, who have begun to put a wedge between themselves and the bottom three.
Their 3-2 win over QPR on Wednesday lifted them three points clear of the drop zone, and there is no doubting the O’Neill effect is starting to be felt on Wearside.
“Wednesday night was just fantastic, really fantastic. It’s encouraging. We badly needed some points on the board and that’s been achieved. But we have still a long way to go, obviously,” O’Neill said.
The likes of Nicklas Bendtner, Lee Cattermole and Titus Bramble appear to be rediscovering their touch under the new boss, who still has a few injury concerns ahead of the Everton’s visit.
Striker Connor Wickham is unlikely to recover in time for the clash, having already missed the QPR match with swelling in his knee. Long-term injury victims Fraizer Campbell and goalkeeper Craig Gordon are on the mend after their knee problems.
Everton, meanwhile, will be without Seamus Coleman (thigh) for the trip, while midfielder Jack Rodwell is yet to shake off hamstring strains.
David Moyes’ men typically lift their tempo around this time of year to finish the season strongly.
In 11th, they will have to make a run soon if they are to avoid finishing outside the top eight for the first time in six years.
Everton’s impressive record against Sunderland is worth noting, but may prove of little consequence given O’Neill’s growing influence on Wearside.
The last time Sunderland picked up three points against Everton was in 2001. Since then, a torrid 14-match winless run has followed.
