Sunderland will look to extend their unbeaten streak at the Stadium of Light to seven games when they take on Norwich City on Wednesday.
Sunderland has not lost at home since December 3, the day Martin O’Neill was recruited as manager, but the home side will find it tough against a Norwich side that is unbeaten in 2012 and has not lost away from home since December 3.
Norwich defeated West Brom 2-1 away from home on Saturday in the FA Cup fourth round, their second win at the Hawthorns in two weeks.
19-year-old goalkeeper Jed Steer was the hero on debut for Norwich making several fine saves, including two late in the match that were rated ‘world class’ by manager Paul Lambert.
Steer was in the side due to Lambert’s decision to rest regular goalkeeper John Ruddy, one of a host of key players given a night off that also included Steve Morison, Bradley Johnson and Kyle Naughton.
Sunderland’s FA Cup fourth round duties are not over yet after they could only manage a 1-1 draw against northern rivals Middlesbrough on Sunday.
Frazier Campbell cancelled out Barry Robson’s opener to earn Sunderland a draw and a replay on February 7.
It was Campbell’s first match in 18 months following two knee surgeries and the Sunderland striker, who came on at the start of the second half, was thrilled after the match.
“It’s a dream start,” Campbell said. “I didn’t expect to get any minutes today so to get on and score was brilliant.”
Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill was quick to praise Campbell as a player who never let his injuries get him down.
“He’s been coming in every day with a smile on his face, and he lifts everyone at the football club because of his attitude,” O’Neill said.
“It was great for him to have something to celebrate.”
O’Neill’s side could move above Norwich with a win on Wednesday.
Sunderland are 10th on the Premier League table with 27 points, just two points behind ninth-placed Norwich.
