Blackpool withstood a Sunderland onslaught to notch their fifth victory on the road this season with a 2-0 result at the Stadium of Light.
DJ Campbell struck in each half to take his goal tally to five this season, all of which have been scored away from home.
The visitors had to weather an almost constant storm from the home side who found Blackpool goalkeeper Richard Kingson in inspired form.
Sunderland controlled proceedings from the outset and Blackpool rarely left their own half during the first 15 minutes.
The home side’s first glimpse of goal came after 12 minutes when Darren Bent latched onto a neat through-ball but slipped his strike wide.
Bent’s strike partner Asamoah Gyan was next to come close, muscling onto a lofted pass from Lee Cattermole and prodding his effort just wide.
Blackpool then began to threaten themselves but spurned the best early chance when Campbell inexplicably sliced his effort wide.
Blackpool’s brief spurt proved something of a wake-up call for Sunderland, who quickly regained control. But chances continued to come and go without the necessary finishing touches.
And Sunderland paid for their profligacy five minutes after the break when Campbell made amends for his earlier mistake, turning home GaryTaylor-Fletcher’s cross.
Sunderland came straight back and could have equalised within a minute had Cattermole’s free header not fired straight at Kingson.
Phil Bardsley’s fierce drive was then palmed clear by the Ghana goalkeeper, who also produced a miraculous save to deny Steed Malbranque at the back post.
In stoppage time, Campbell sealed the win by turning a low Phillips cross in via the crossbar to wrap up an astonishing victory.
