Swansea City and Sunderland played out a scoreless stalemate at Liberty Stadium, with both sides picking up their second point of the season.
Visitors Sunderland had the first opportunity of the game when new signing John O’Shea hit the crossbar with a header from a Sebastian Larsson corner.
Steve Bruce’s men continued to press and Swansea gloveman Michel Vorm needed to be at his best to deny Asamoah Gyan when the striker was put through by Stephane Sessegnon.
Brendan Rodgers’ side rallied after a good Sunderland start and could have gone ahead, but Scott Sinclair’s 25-yard effort hit the crossbar.
The hosts came close again moments later when Leon Britton carved through the midfield and found Danny Graham, who was well denied by Sunderland defender Wes Brown.
Sunderland could have taken the lead minutes after the restart following a good counter attack involving Sessegnon and Jack Colback, but Gyan failed to control the ball when put through onto goal.
Swansea began to grow into the half and Graham had another opportunity to find the net when he met Neil Taylor’s deep cross only to see his header well saved by Simon Mignolet.
With the hosts pressing for their first Premier League win, Sunderland were reduced to playing on the counter, a tactic that nearly paid off when Gyan raced away down the left before again being denied by Vorm.
Despite both sides trying gallantly to find a winner in the closing stages, resolute defending ensured a share of the spoils after an eventful encounter.
