West Brom eased relegation worries and sealed their first win in seven matches with an impressive 3-2 victory over Blackpool in an entertaining tussle on Saturday.
The Baggies recovered from David Vaughan’s opener and, 10 minutes from time, held the lead courtesy of goals from Peter Odemwingie and James Morrison either side of the interval.
Gary Taylor-Fletcher’s late strike appeared to have grabbed the Seasiders a late point, but Odemwingie then stole in with an 87th-minute winner to register West Brom’s first points since early December.
Vaughan’s opener on 11 minutes had exposed Albion’s nerves, and both sides wasted chances throughout with West Brom’s Chris Brunt and the Tangerines’ DJ Campbell both guilty in the opening half.
The home side finally leveled when Odemwingie beat the offside trap to fire past Richard Kingston just before the break.
Having spurned a great chance inside the opening 60 seconds of the match, Campbell repeated his prolificacy from Charlie Adam’s 50th-minute through-ball – and was made to pay when Kingston parried Jerome Thomas’ low cross straight to James Morrison, who gratefully edged Albion ahead on 52 minutes.
Morrison and Odemwingie both wasted one-on-one openings as the second half wore on, and seemed set to pay a heavy price as Taylor-Fletcher met Matt Phillips’ pinpoint cross 10 minutes from time to grab the Seasiders what had earlier appeared an unlikely point.
Odemwingie, however, had one last chance – and took it – seizing on a long ball from defence by Gonzalo Jara to poke past Kingston”s despairing dive and seal a vital win.
The Nigerian’s eighth goal of the campaign was greeted with mass celebration around The Hawthorns as West Brom climbed clear of immediate relegation trouble.
