Andy Johnson’s late goal rescued a precious point for Fulham in a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Wigan.

The former England striker had only been on the field for 10 minutes when he collected a pass from Clint Dempsey four minutes from time and netted with his right foot.

The goal had elements of fortune about it, his strike taking a wicked deflection off Gary Caldwell before surviving a strong hand from Ali Al Habsi on its way in.

Fulham will feel they were due the bounce of the ball, however, after dominating the final third of the game and seeing an ‘equaliser’ from Dempsey chalked off for a handball.

Hugo Rodallega’s strike early in the second half had looked like giving Wigan a crucial win at the DW Stadium.

The Colombian took delivery of a long ball from Al Habsi, before lobbing the ball over David Stockdale and into the back of the net.

But almost all the excitement came after the break.

Ronnie Stam did well to create the opening down the right, and the Wigan striker will be wondering how he did not find the goal.

Damien Duff then did likewise at the other end, racing on to a through-ball from Dempsey before side-footing the ball against the legs of Al Habsi when he ought to have done better.

After Rodallega put Wigan ahead, the visitors dominated virtually the rest of the game, although they were made to wait for their leveller.

It looked like it had come through Dempsey, only for the officials to rule it out for a clear handball.

Al Habsi then made a good save from Dempsey and Gary Caldwell blocked a volley from the American in the face, before Johnson came on for Simon Davies and rescued a point for his side.
