A last-gasp winner from Charles N’Zogbia completed a 3-2 comeback as Wigan condemned West Ham to relegation on Sunday.
Two goals from Demba Ba had given visitors West Ham a commanding 2-0 lead by the interval at the DW Stadium.
But the brilliance of N’Zogbia and a first English Premier League goal from Conor Sammon meant Wigan kept their survival hopes alive until the final round of the season.
The home side started strongly and could have been a goal up inside the first minute.
Tom Cleverley’s shot appeared to hit the arm of Jordan Spence, before the ball looped goalwards and was only kept out by a fine save from goalkeeper Robert Green.
Momo Diame then fired just over, before West Ham took the lead with barely 10 minutes played.
Jack Collison’s shot was well blocked by defender Gary Caldwell, but the ball rolled out to Thomas Hitzlsperger on the edge of the area.
The German’s cross was pinpoint, and Ba could not miss from six yards out.
Rocked by the goal, Wigan struggled to put passes together and fell further behind on 25 minutes.
Again Hitzlsperger was the architect with a left-foot cross.
James Tomkins headed back across goal and Ba was on hand a second time to nod home past Ali Al-Habsi.
But credit to Wigan – they mustered a response and could have pulled a goal back after creating several decent chances before the interval.
Antolin Alcaraz laid on the first, teeing up Diame inside the penalty area, only for the midfielder to look for Emmerson Boyce instead of shooting, allowing the West Ham defence to clear.
An overhead kick from Hugo Rodallega then forced a save from Green, who did even better to deny Diame after the Senegal international had wriggled his way through.
Rodallega then headed straight at Green from point-blank range off Ben Watson’s corner.
Knowing their season was on the line, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez made a double change at the break.
Sammon and Victor Moses were thrown on for Cleverley and James McCarthy respectively, and the switch reaped instant rewards.
First, N’Zogbia fired an unstoppable free-kick beyond Green, before Sammon latched on to a through-ball from Watson to find the far corner of the net mid-way through the second half.
Watson had Wigan’s first chance to win it in the very last minute.
His shot beat Green only to bounce back off the far post and into the hands of the fortunate goalkeeper.
It looked like their opportunity to grab all three points had gone.
But N’Zogbia picked up the ball in the fourth added minute, turned his man inside out and then steered the ball underneath Green, sending the home fans wild.
The defeat consigns West Ham to the drop, while Wigan are now level with Birmingham and Blackpool on 39 points with just one thrilling round remaining.
