Preview of opening weekend of Serie A

The Italian football season starts later on today as champions AC Milan host Lazio at the San Siro.

The start of the Serie A campaign has been delayed by a player strike but the season will start with this cracking encounter.

The champions are optimistic that this season they can challenge for both the Serie A and Champions League crowns.

The Champions haven’t heavily strengthened their squad but have added left-back Taye Taiwo, centre-back Philippe Mexes and midfielder Alberto Aquilani to their squad.

The Rossoneri are once again one of the favourites to win Serie A but won’t find this fixture easy. The visitors enjoyed a really good campaign under boss Edy Reja last season. The club finished 5th in Serie A and have made summer interesting signings.

The signings of strikers Miroslav Klose and Djibril Cisse are the big ones. The strikers will be expected to fill the void left by temperamental but gifted striker Mauro Zarate. Lazio will do well to finish in the top six this season.

AC Milan’s neighbours and former-champions Inter kick-off their season with a difficult trip to Palermo. Inter will have a new look strike force this season after the departure of Cameroonian superstar Samuel Eto’o.

The players charged with the task of scoring the goals for the Nerazzurri are the aforementioned Mauro Zarate and Uruguayan Diego Forlan, who has arrived from Atletico Madrid. The big transfer news at Inter this summer is the fact that they have kept hold of in-demand midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

Palermo finished a disappointing 8th position in Serie A last season but are hopeful of better in this campaign. Although they have lost star midfielder Javier Pastore to Paris St Germain for £37million.  Its hard to predict how their campaign will go.

Juventus are experiencing yet another new dawn under former-midfielder Antonio Conte this time. Juventus kick-off their campaign with a home fixture against Parma. The big arrivals at Juve this summer are veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlo from champions AC Milan and striker MirkoVucinic from Roma.

The Old Lady finished in a disappointing 7th place in Serie A last season and the least that the fans will be expecting is a challenge for the European places this season. Everybody at the club will be expecting a victory on the opening day of the campaign over relegation candidates Parma.

Elsewhere Roma have a new look about them with Spaniard Luis Enrique coming in as head coach. The former-Barcelona B coach has managed to bring young striker Bojan from his former club. The list of other signings for Roma is quite exciting for their fans.

The club have signed Simon Kjaer, Erik Lamela, Jose Angel and Maarten Stekelenburg to name just a few. Roma finished 6th in Serie A last season but there will be high expectations this season, after the club spent big on new recruits.

The Giallorossi kick-off their campaign with a home match against minnows Cagliari. Elsewhere Napoli visit Cesena with hopes high in Naples that the club will have another successful season. They have managed to keep their key players and it could be an interesting season for the Azzurri.

Last seasons fourth place team Udinese kick-off their campaign with a trip to Lecce, the Bianconeri have suffered the loss of two of their best players in the shape of Alexis Sanchez and Gokhan Inler. It will be hard for them to again challenge for a top four place.

This seasons title race will definitely be an interesting one in Serie A. With five teams in with a realistic chance of claiming the crown at the end of the season. Champions AC Milan will definitely not have it easy in the title race this season.

Who will win the Serie A title this season?
