Preview of the big European games this weekend

This weekend sees some of the biggest clubs in Serie A and the Premier League come head to head. Although early in the season these games could shape the season of some of Italy and England’s giants.

Here is the pick of the games in the English and Italy top flights this weekend:

Premier League

Tottenham vs. Liverpool (Sunday 1:30 PM)

Two of last seasons Premier League top six meet at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Tottenham gained their first Premier League victory of the season last weekend at Wolves.

Striker Emmanuel Adebayor scored his first Spurs goal on his debut. England midfielder Scott Parker also made a good impression on his debut. However this will be another test for Harry Redknapp’s side. Both players look to be good additions to the Spurs squad.

Liverpool suffered their first league defeat of the season at Stoke last weekend. The Reds however were slightly unlucky to lose the game and will be looking to claim a victory to keep pace with the leading pack in the top flight.

Manchester United vs. Chelsea (Sunday 4 PM)

In the late kick-off, the two recent dominant forces in England football come head to head at Stamford Bridge. United have made a fantastic start to their Premier League campaign. England striker Wayne Rooney will be looking to add to his goal tally of eight goals in the Premier League.

The 25 year-old is looking to break a Premier League record and be the first player to ever score three consecutive hat-tricks in the top flight.

Chelsea have been getting the results in the Premier League but their performances have been criticised. Boss Andre Villas-Boas will be hoping his side can produce a result and a performance at Old Trafford. Spanish striker Fernando Torres has struggled to score goals at Chelsea but loves playing against the champions.

Serie A

Inter vs. Roma (Saturday 7:45 PM)

The home side lost their opening game of the campaign 4-3 at Palermo. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini is already under pressure after his side also suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Trabzonspor in the Champions League. Gasperini will be hoping to claim his first competitive victory as Inter boss against Roma.

Their opponents Roma also suffered a defeat on the opening day of their league campaign with a 2-1 reverse at home to Cagliari. Roma have a new look team and coaching staff. The club have spent millions on buying new players and are hopeful of a successful season in Serie A.

Napoli vs. AC Milan (Sunday 7: 45 PM)

Napoli made a good start to their Serie A campaign with a 3-1 victory at Cesena. The boys from Naples are regarded as genuine Serie A title contenders this season. This game will be a test of whether Napoli can really challenge for the title this season.

Serie A champions AC Milan started the season with a 2-2 home draw with new look Lazio. AC however currently have major injury problems. The club will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Philippe Mexes and Mauro Ambrosini for this clash. And midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng will also miss this encounter.
