Putting in what was a rampant Champions League performance on Wednesday night, PSG cruised their way to a routine 3-0 romp against AC Milan in Paris.
Seeking an immediate European response following their infamous 4-1 drumming away at Newcastle earlier in the month, Luis Enrqiue’s side opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark as attacking talisman Kylian Mbappe notched his second Champions League strike of the season.
While many might have expected the French giants to face a rugged test in Paris here, the reigning Ligue 1 champions certainly enjoyed a major flurry when returning from the half-time break.
With summer recruit and ex-Eintracht Frankfurt ace doubling PSG’s leas just eight minuets after the half-time interval, it was eventually 22-year-old Kang-In Lee who put the cheery on top of a glorious night for Enrique’s squad.
Finding a route back to the top of the Group F standings, PSG also cashed in on an AC Milan side that have endured a recent struggle since returning from October’s international break last weekend.
Still waiting to open their Champions League account and without a win from their first three appearances, the Italian heavyweights now face a real uphill battle.
In what was largely a one-way contest on Wednesday night, we have taken a look at the key talking points.
PSG are turning a corner
Completely blown away at St. James’ Park on October 4th as they slumped to an infamous 4-1 drumming at the hands of Newcastle, PSG always knew that they had an abundance of pressure on their shoulders here.
However, while the French icons might have struggled to initially find much stability since they welcomed Enrique to Paris over the summer, it does appear that Wednesday’s hosts have turned a recent corner.
Marking their return from October’s international break last weekend with another free-scoring performance as they secured a 3-0 victory at home against Strasbourg, PSG have now won each of their previous three appearances across all competitions.
Claiming what was a much-needed Champions League romp here and finding a route to the top of the Group F standings, Enrique’s men have handed themselves a major platform to build on going forward.
Now mustering six points from their first three European this season, it is no secret that PSG have their sights solely focused on Champions League success this time around.
Who else but Mbappe?
Returning to Paris on Wednesday night knowing that they had plenty of pressure on their shoulders, it was always clear that PSG’s attacking icon would have a leading role to play in the French capital.
Although Mbappe might have entered October’s international in the midst of a four-match run without a goal, the 24-year-old has certainly come roaring back in some style.
Spearheading France’s EURO 24 qualifying charge during the fortnight interval and notching three strikes in his back-to-back international appearances, the ex-Monaco starlet has his sights set on making more Champions League history this season.
Notching his second second Champions League goal of the season here and causing AC Milan a string of defensive issues, Mbappe knows that he is the key to PSG’s European charge this season.
Now registering five goals in just his previous four appearances for club and country over the past fortnight, the record-breaking Mbappe appears to have hit top gear at a crucial time for the Champions League dreamers.
Milan seeking a Champions League scrap now
Reaching the Champions League semi-finals last season and gaining a string of public praise, AC Milan opened this year’s European adventure riding an extended wave of momentum.
However, while the Italian heavyweights might have come flying out of the traps when opening up the new Serie A campaign back in August, Stefano Pioli’s side have struggled to find any kind of stability on the European stage so far.
Getting their Group F run underway with back-to-back 0-0 stalemates against Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle respectively, AC now face a major uphill battle in their bid to punch another knockout stage ticket.
Failing to pick up any kind of momentum last weekend as they slumped to a 1-0 loss at home against historic rivals Juventus, Wednesday’s guests have also shown some extended issues in the final third.
In fact, Pioli’s camp have failed to muster a single Champions League strike from any of their first three appearances so far this year.
