Paris Saint-Germain have announced that they have agreed a deal to sign Chelsea defender David Luiz.

Luiz, who moved to Stamford Bridge in a reported €25 million transfer from Primeira Liga side Benfica, has fallen out of favour under Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, and was restricted to 15 Premier League starts this season.

A statement on PSG’s official website on Friday read: “Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea FC and David Luiz would like to confirm that they reached an agreement regarding the terms of an upcoming transfer of the Brazilian defender that would occur during the next transfer window which is to start on 10th June 2014.

“In accordance with the player’s wish to prepare for and play in the World Cup in his home country in the best possible conditions, both clubs and David Luiz wished to reach an agreement as soon as possible between, on the one hand, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea FC, and on the other, between the Parisian club and the player in order to formalise the transfer as soon as the transfer window opens.”

Luiz, 27, has won the FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea and was part of the side that came from 3-1 down on aggregate to beat PSG on away goals with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge in the quarter-finals of this year’s Champions League.

But he is now set to link up with the players that he helped to defeat as PSG look to bolster their squad ahead of another assault on Europe’s premier club competition next season.

Luiz joins compatriots and fellow centre-backs Thiago Silva, Alex and Marquinhos in the French capital, although the latter is expected to leave PSG as a result of this deal.

Laurent Blanc’s men won the Ligue 1 and Coupe de la Ligue under his stewardship, but had been expected to curb their spending after being sanctioned by UEFA for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations.

PSG were fined €60m by the governing body and had their Champions League squad reduced to 21 players for next season.

However, despite those punishments, PSG – who have spent almost €400m in player transfers since the takeover by the Qatar Investment Authority in May 2011 – have opted to use further expenditure to lure Luiz to the club.
