PSV Eindhoven will have to make do without left-back Erik Pieters for up to three months, with the defender to undergo surgery on a foot injury.
The Dutch side had already revealed on Saturday that Pieters had sustained a fractured metatarsal in PSV’s 1-0 Eredivisie win over Utrecht last weekend and they have now confirmed that the Netherlands international will be out of action for the rest of 2011.
“Pieters sustained a foot injury after 30 minutes of play against his former club Utrecht, which forced him to be substituted,” a statement on their official website read.
“A scan has revealed Pieters has suffered a fractured metatarsal in his right foot and he will now undergo surgery on Tuesday.”
“The left-back, who was replaced by Abel Tamata, will be out until at least the winter break.”
PSV sit joint second in the Eredivisie table with 20 points from nine games.
