(GSM) – Dutch giants PSV have signed former Ajax and Internazionale winger Andy van der Meyde until the end of the season, in an attempt to replace Zenit St. Petersburg bound Danko Lazovic.
The 30-year-old had been a free agent, after leaving Merseyside club Everton in the summer.
And it now seems that he has made a return to top-flight football with PSV after signing a contract for the rest of the season with an option for a further two years.
“I want to be important to PSV,” he said.
“I am delighted to be here and hope to bring something extra to the team. The chance to return to football with a big club like PSV is wonderful.”
However, van der Meyde’s signing comes after the imminent departure of striker Lazovic to Zenit.
The 26-year-old had joined PSV in 2007 after a season with Vitesse Arnhem.
PSV coach Fred Rutten admitted he was disappointed by the striker’s decision to leave for former 2008 UEFA Cup winners Zenit, who have signed him for an undisclosed fee in a four-year deal.
“Left in the lurch is a big phrase, but it is a disappointment,” he said.
Discussing the departure, PSV general director Jan Reker said: “Last week Danko told the coach he had an offer from Russia. Fred Rutten was a bit shocked, after which a number of meetings have taken place. After long deliberation it has been decided to let Danko go.”
