PSV midfielder Zakaria Labyad has confirmed reports that he is on the verge of joining Sporting Lisbon.
The 19-year-old has just a couple of months left on his deal with the Dutch giants and he is set to leave the club at the end of the season after becoming disillusioned with life at Philips Stadium.
The player admits he is disappointed by the lack of initiative shown by the club chiefs.
“Marcel Brands (PSV technical director) had a conversation with my father on Sunday, but PSV didn’t have a new proposal for my contract renewal,” Labyad told De Telegraaf.
Rather than extending his contract at PSV, the player decided to accept an offer from Sporting Lisbon and is set to join his new clubs when his current contract expires at the end of the season.
“I had a call from Marcel Brands today. He said Benfica wanted to sign me. I was very disappointed.
”PSV wanted to sell me in January, but I blocked the transfer then, because I wanted to stay in Eindhoven.
“Now PSV wanted to sell me to Benfica, but I finally opted for Sporting.”
The player believes a move to Lisbon will further aid his development.
“I think Sporting is the right thing for me. They work with many talents and I have a good feeling.”
The attacking midfielder has been in scintillating form this season, scoring 5 goals and creating 7 assists in 28 Eredivisie games.
