(GSM) – The Glazer family is set to sell Manchester United to Qatar’s royal family in a £1.5 billion deal, according to a report in the Sun.
The Sun quotes a United director confirming that ‘the family will sell’ at ‘one time’ for almost double the £790 million the Glazers had paid five and a half years ago.
According to the report, Qatar Holdings’ negotiations over the paying of United’s £252m debt was the first step in the process of buying the English club.
“They have already brought in extra finance from a third party in a bid to set the club up for a sale,” the source believes.
The paper also quotes a Middle East “football finance expert” who speaks about the potential expansion of the Gulf country’s influence in the game.
“They have made tentative moves before with little success, but this time it looks like they could be going for it,” the source claimed.
“Now they have landed the 2022 World Cup, the country wants to expand its influence in the game across the globe.”
Qatar Holdings is a company owned by the royal family in the Middle Easter country governed by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
