Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man at Manchester United, Carlos Queiroz, is set to take over from Luiz Felipe Scolari as Portugal’s national team coach, Portuguese papers reported on Thursday.
The reports said that ongoing contract talks were almost completed and that Queiroz was set to ink a four-year contract to take charge of Portugal through the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa and Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
The 55-year-old Queiroz would take over as national team coach for a second time having been in charge from 1991 to 1993.
He was coach at Real Madrid from 2003 to 2004 and has been assistant to Ferguson at Old Trafford since then.
The Portugal job became vacant when Scolari opted to join Chelsea after the Euro 2008 finals.
