Argentina did themselves a great favor on Saturday, beating neighboring Uruguay 2-1 in the South American World Cup qualifiers.
Only six minutes had been played when Barcelona’s Lionel Messi put the home side in the lead.
And another Spain-based player, Atletico Madrid’s Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero, netted Argentina’s second in the 12th minute to give his team an early, comfortable lead.
The Uruguayans then began fighting back and Lugano scored for 2-1 in the 40th minute, but Argentina held on to their lead in a match that saw a total of ten bookings, five to each side.
Argentina surpass Brazil for second place behind Paraguay, but their Brazilian arch rivals still have their match at Venezuela ahead.
