Atlético de Madrid and Liverpool have secured a spot in the second round of the UEFA Cup following victories over PSV Eindhoven and Olympique de Marseille respectively.

At an empty Vicente Calderon stadium, Atlético needed only 14 minutes to take the lead through Simao Sabrosa. Maxi Rodriguez slammed home for 2-0 in the 28th minute.

Danny Koevermans gave PSV new hope in the 47th minute but the Spanish hosts held on to their lead to clinch a spot in the next round.

The only goal at Anfield Road was scored by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on 23 minutes. The narrow win is enough for the Reds to be certain of a second round berth.

Who finishes first in this group and which team advances to the UEFA Cup, is to be decided on December 9th.
